“Is there really no way to escape?”
•••
“G-G-Guys,” Taehyung whispered in agitation, shivering uncontrollably to death. He didn’t even have sufficient vigour to keep his eyes open. Everything around him seemed faded and black.
The person, who was standing nearest to him, heard his trembling voice, “Taehyung?! Y-you o-okay? Keep going long-longer?” He asked, trembling lightly himself. The wind around them was cold and wild which did them no mercy. Glacier surrounding them, gelid and frosty.“I-I-I can’t!” Taehyung exclaimed, falling on his knees almost immediately. He hugged his body, praying to himself that hopefully, he’d survive. He wanted to go back, back to a very warm place called— home. “Ple--please un—derstand!” He choked out.
He needed warmth, his blood was freezing. In a place where no sun arises, no sunsets, he was freezing.
Please…
The other members of the group who were actually ahead of Taehyung turned around and gasped in shock. They rushed towards Taehyung and surrounded him.
The group consisted of six people, very brave people, who thought that they could reach the north pole. Obviously, they came embattled. They thought they had everything they required when they started but after spending three nights at a place you have no idea about— it seemed hard to survive. Worse, the destination is still approximately three nights away.
“Are you ok??” A feminine voice asked, caressing Taehyung with her covered hands, concern brewing in her eyes.
“I-I- I want to go back, guys… I can’t— here.” Taehyung said, shakily. He has been fighting with himself for so long. He clamped within himself and tried not to pass out.
“But we’ve come so far.” A man said softly, rubbing at Taehyung’s back.
“It’s not that long—”
“We can’t turn back now though?” The eldest person said.
Another ponderous wave of algid ice came across them and they all had to fall on their knees, shakily holding their ski sticks. That was frigorific. Everyone was trembling.
“Taehyung we can’t leave you—” A small voice said, the voice of teeth chattering could be heard. It was trembling. Was there genuinely no way to escape?
Want to sleep…
“What should we do? We don’t have enough time—”
“I’ll- I’ll turn back— you guys go-go a-ahead,” Taehyung glanced at his friends' faces and nodded in confirmation.
Miss home…
“We can’t leave—” The same small voice mumbled again.
“I’ll meet you at- at the gate— where we started… I can’t do this anymore. P-please understand,” Taehyung cowered. Hands hugging his legs and his face buried in the small space, his voice shaking literally.
“Are- are you sure?” The leader asked, his hand shakily placed over Taehyung's knees.
Taehyung hummed and the leader stood up, getting the confirmation he needed.
But how can I? I can’t go back alone, can I?
“Okay then. We’ll be leaving you with essential things you’ll need while returning. We meet at the gate. Anyone else who wants to stop here?”
The others shook their heads slightly but surely. Wanting to be at a warm place but maybe they could reach their goal. They thought they would be able to fight this.
They left more oxygen cylinders, a lunch box, another pair of gloves, glasses and a no-more-warm blanket that was already wet with the amount of snow on it. It was actually frosted. A set of tent, sticks and a small box of a matchbox.
Is this enough?
“Promise, you’ll be there?”
“Promise,” Taehyung mumbled, he wanted to pass out already but he knew he had to walk to go back. To finally, peacefully rest and have a lovely sunny day at his work. He wanted to greet people with a shiny, bright face and not this stressed, drained out expression.
He misses his friends a lot. He knew many of them must’ve asked how was his tour to the north pole on his Instantgram, Tweeter and mails… he misses wasting time on his phone. He misses— doing just— absolutely nothing.
“Safe Journey,” With those two words, others left for a more challenging walk, covered in huge coats and clothes with multiple layers of coating but it felt so cold… so cold, that made some just want to… stop. They left Taehyung’s embrace and he felt some more energy escaping him.
“Safe Journey,” Taehyung breathed out, he felt suffocated. He wanted to get out of here but he can’t just vanish, can he?
He stood up after almost ten minutes, failing and stumbling down again but getting up eventually. They’ve had marked the places that had a high density of snow so that one would not fall if the ice layer suddenly breaks. But what would happen if it breaks? Nothing. It’s so cold.
Everything here is frozen.
He picked up his belongings and commenced with ski at a torturously slow pace.
Just walk for some time and when you can’t— set a tent up and…ugh
He remembers walking slowly for a long time to infinite distance and just breathing after that, it was black.
That’s all he remembers.
All that he could recall.
He felt his body give up and stumble when a small wave of cold striking his body, again. The huge weight he was carrying just left him.
He lost energy.
That’s it.
That’s the end.
He lost hopes of getting up again. He tried to extend his hand out, hoping that maybe someone warm would hold him, catch him.
But who would come to such a place and find him there?
People may be celebrating birthdays somewhere and maybe some are attending funerals but everything's happening so far away. There's no one in this world who would save him from freezing, so, Taehyung laid there, unconscious, hand extended out, legs curled up, body freezing.
Hold me, someone… don’t wanna die yet...
Save me…
A warm tear left his eye but soon it wasn’t warm anymore. What was happening?
There’s no happy ending for every person alive on this earth, right?
