Kentucky Rain was named after her mom's favorite Elvis song. She didn't attend school, own shoes, or eat meat. She worked at a factory. From the age of three months old, Kentucky had sung. "Your voice was so beautiful, that birds would quiet to listen." said Georgia Rain, her mom. And Kentucky pitied everyone else, and no one knew why.
On Kentucky's thirteenth birthday, she got socks. The socks had a hole in each, for her big toes, and sweat stains so deep in the fabric, that Kentucky thought they were naturally yellow. But they were still the most expensive thing she had ever owned. When she opened the old newspaper, Kentucky went silent. "Gawd Almighty Mama! You gonn' be broke by Christmas!" she finally yelled.
Kentucky and Georgia lived by the dumpster outside the 'Fancy People Dress Factory'. Though Kentucky liked their home, Georgia Hated it.
