Two Peas

Two Peas

Like two peas, the same in all but gender,

they snap and snipe until one or other throws a bender.

Words are exchanged, misunderstood,

taken as critique, as having a bad attitude.

Neither can see how the other feels,

blinded by anger, temper that reels.

Father and daughter bicker and shout,

they don't understand how it rips my heart out.

Is it only me that sees the hurt

Dealt with every heated word?

And now my baby's leaving the nest

to be all alone in the big bad world.

It had to happen, I know that,

But the bitter term of leaving

Is something I didn't foresee.

And now I find that I'm grieving.

Already my home feels empty

As my second child bids farewell,

Belongings packed in boxes

Waving her off as the tears swell.
