The news reports would say that I vanished into thin air.

Plenty would theorize that when my car spun out of control in the the middle of snowhere, I must've wandered off into the woods and froze to death — maybe fell off a cliff and dropped to a quick, painless end if I was lucky.

I've never been lucky.

The search would go on for days, weeks, but there would be no trace of me aside from an empty car and the track of footprints leading through the snow and into the forest. The officers on duty that night most likely shook their heads as their flashlights followed my trail, because yet another person had gotten themselves lost in the Ozarks.

They could search until their boots rubbed blisters on their heels and the batteries in their flashlights died. No one who was going to find me...at least not in this world.
