"I wish to undo all of my wishes," exclaimed Mr. White.
As soon as the statement was said, the knocking stopped.
Suddenly a cry from his wife, Mrs. White, bellowed from downstairs. Mr. White frantically ran downstairs, and saw Mrs. White, on the floor, in tears.
"Barbara! What's wrong?" Cried Mr. White.
"My son, I thought he would be here? What did we do wrong?" Bellowed Mrs. White.
"Wait, then who was knocking on the door?" Asked Mr. White with alarm.
"I-I'm not sure."
Without a thought, Mr. White ran out of the door, and into his backyard. As he looked around, Mr. White saw nothing but grass and trees.
"I don't see any-" Mr. White froze. Standing behind a tree was an eerie, human-sized, black figure.
"Billy, come back inside, it's cold out here." Mr. White turned around, and standing in front of him, was Mrs. White.
"Barbara, I think I just saw someone, in the woods!" Hollered Mr. White.
"Really?! Where?"
"Over here!"
But when Mr. White turned back around, the figure was gone.
"Are you sure you saw something, Billy?" Questioned Mrs. White. "I don't see anything."
"I-I am sure that I saw something, I think."
"Billy, please come back inside, you'll get a cold."
"O-OK," said Mr. White hesitantly.
"You were right Billy, the monkey's paw is a lie," sighed Mrs. White, as they arrived at their front door.
"I just really hoped that we could have seen our son again."
Finally, Mrs. White opened the door, and what she saw on the other side, made her scream with surprise and joy. As she opened the door, standing on the other side, was Herbert.
"Herbert, my Son! You're alive!" Cried Mrs. White. She ran into the house and hugged Herbert intensely.
"Huh?! Whaddya mean, mom? Why wouldn't I be alive?" Asked Herbert.
As Mrs. White was celebrating her son's reincarnation, Mr. White just stood outside the door, shocked, with questions flowing through his head.
How is he here? When did he get inside? Am I dreaming?
"Dad, what happened? Is mom OK?" Asked Herbert with concern.
"Herbert, my son! You were crushed to death by a machine, and your father wished you back to life! It worked Billy, the monkey's paw actually worked!" Exclaimed Mrs. White.
"Um, dad, is this true, or has mom gone insane?"
"Yes Herbert, it is true," said Mr. White, still standing outside.
"Wow, so all of the "magic monkey paw" stuff is true?" Asked Herbert.
"Yes, and we are all very, very, thankful!" Exclaimed Mrs. White, still hugging Herbert.
"Wow, this is a lot of information to take in. I think that i'm just going to go to bed, if you'll excuse me," said Herbert wearily.
"But Herbert, we spent an entire week knowing that you were dead! Please, stay down here and talk to us!" Cried Mrs. White.
"Maybe later," groaned Herbert, as he walked upstairs.
"Well, I guess he's right, it is one in the morning. We should get ready for bed, and close that door Billy, you're letting all the cold air in!" Scolded Mrs. White.
