Chapter Two:
Sun, Sand and Santa Claus
The plane landed without a hitch, much to Ned’s appreciation; I swear if it had shuddered even slightly, that boy would’ve squeezed my hand to death. By the time we were able to take off our seat belts, my fingers were turning blue. I pitied whoever sat next to him on the return flight, the weather in England was getting worse by the day – according to the weather forecast – so flights were going to be horrific. As much as I liked the kid, I prayed to every god or deity that I was not stuck next to him. He could talk a mile a minute about absolutely nothing! I mean seriously, the amount of useless information he told me was preposterous. Thankfully when the plane landed we went our separate ways, I waited for the moment we would be reunited; I still needed to kick that kids butt at Go Fish!
Whilst we were waiting for my aunt to pick us up, my eyes happened to wonder slightly further down the taxi lane to see that arrogant guy from the airport, the one who caught me watching him. My eyes widened as a smirk began to play across his lips, he instantly remembered me; winking at me knowingly. I rolled my eyes, not wanting to play his game. He’d gotten me once, but I wasn’t about to get fooled twice.
My foot began to tap unconsciously, boredom setting in as I looked around, trying to feel something about how beautiful it was here, but all I got was how many days it was until my first exam, how many things would distract me from studying, from revising. Anger made its way through my body; there was no way I was going to get the results I wanted, with all the distractions! Not to mention the mandatory meet ups with my aunt and uncle. Why couldn’t my parents have planned to come over for summer? That way all I had to worry about was my results, not the actual exam!
I bit my tongue, trying to stop myself from complaining; I’d been told off by my mom enough times in the last few days for being grumpy, I didn’t need to piss her off anymore. I just needed to focus on getting as much time to revise as possible; my parents had agreed to that much. A smile of relief flashed across my lips as my aunt’s car pulled up alongside us, my eyes widened as a tall hot looking guy stepped out of the car, a smile widening on his face.
“I’m Alejandro.” He introduced, holding out a hand. I gaped at him; his tan skin was glowing, bright blue eyes the colour of the sky. From the light white vest you could tell he was toned, not a lot of muscle but you could tell he kept fit. I blinked, remembering manners and shook his hand, swiping on a quick friendly smile.
“Elise.” I greeted, his eyes travelled down my body. I beamed as his eyes shone with approval, thankful to my best friend for suggesting we work out and keep fight. His eyes kept slinking back to check me out as he greeted the rest of my family. I looked around, a smile widening on my face. My eyes found the guy from the airport, his amused eyes and jingling shoulders made it obvious he was laughing. I narrowed my eyes at him, sticking out my tongue in a child-like fashion. This only served to fuel his laughter as he winked at me, smirking brightly. I shook my head, looking away before he could ruin my good mood. I hoped that this would really be the last time I saw him.
“We should probably get going,” Alejandro said, breaking the silence that had fallen around us. “Food is almost ready, and its best served hot!” My parents chuckled at his comment, quickly getting everything into the car. I stood staring at them, watching the carefree smiles light up their faces. It made my heart swell at the sight for a moment before I snapped out of my trance and quickly slid into the car.

“Come in!” My aunt smiled, waving us in quickly. We all shuffled in through the door, waiting in line as we each were given a massive hug that took the air out of your lungs. I saw my mom’s eyes tear up slightly; it had been years since she’d last seen her sister. I couldn’t imagine what if felt like not see someone so close to you for such a long time. Alejandro had driven the car to the garage, around the back, and had suddenly reappeared with a slightly weird look on his face.
“I see Mr Horden couldn’t wait?” He said to my aunt, her eyes looked back at him with surprise before she figured out what he meant.
“He’s not?” My mom and dad shared an odd look before we all quickly followed Alejandro through the corridor and out to the lounge, where my dear old uncle was sat, in a Santa Clause costume; his face red from the heat, sweat beaded down his face and his shoulders heaved heavily. My aunt’s shocked gasp was followed by her running over to him, her arms quickly fanning his face.
“What in God’s name are you doing?!” She hissed at him, her hands still fanning at him hurriedly. “Take the blasted thing off!” My uncle gulped noticeably, shaking his head adamantly. His lips moved as he whispered something to my aunt, his eyes dropping, embarrassedly.
“What do you mean you can’t take it off?” My dear aunt sometimes didn’t understand the meaning of the word ‘subtle’, it wasn’t naturally in her nature to be aware of the potential for embarrassment. My uncle shot my mom a pleading look, but the sharpness in my aunts’ voice snapped his attention back to her.
My uncle murmured something to her, his whispers slightly louder than last time but my aunt just shook her head angrily. “Oh for heaven’s sake Ronald! Stop mumbling and just speak up!”
“I’m not wearing anything underneath.” My uncle admitted, his face no longer just red from heat, the room went silent with an awkward feeling. “I think I’ll just go change…in my room.” Everyone watched with tense faces as he walked through the corridor, the bells in his shoes and hat tinkling with every step and sway.
We all stood, silent, for a few more moments before my aunt smiled nervously, clapped her hands together and let out a small laugh. “That certainly was interesting, I didn’t even know we had a Santa Claus costume!” To save ourselves from further awkwardness, we all laughed along with her. “Come on, let’s go get a drink!”
