Inspector LeGraund, an energetic man of 34, was called upon, one saturday afternoon by the flighty miss Morton.
"Oh Inspector!" She cried the moment she threw open the door of the Inspector's office.
"Oh, it's just awful, dreadfully awful! You must help me! You simply must!"
Quite confused, the tongue-tied Inspector pulled a chair out from the table in which the exhausted girl flung herself into.
Gaining her composure, Miss. Morton straitened herself and began to tell of her troubles.
" I was just minding my business in my house when Miss Haggle, my maid screamed and came running out of the pantry! It took a few minutes to calm her down, and when she finally was able to tell me what the matter was, she said that Charles, my butler was lying dead, with a stab to the heart, in the pantry!"At this statement, the poor girl flopped over in a cold faint. After issuing her to medical treatment, inspector LeGraund, knowing Miss Morton well, decided to investigate the case further and proceeded to her home. Upon arriving, he saw instantly that Miss Morton had been wise and had called the police to see to it that no one would exit the house.
The only people in the house at the time of the murder was Miss Morton, Charles, the murdered, Miss Haggle, the maid, Gregory, the gardener, and Ralf, Charles' miscreant of a brother.
Upon investigation, Inspector LeGraund interviewed the suspects. Having already heard Miss Morton's story he moved on to Miss Haggle's.
"I was simply going about my daily chores," said shaken Miss Haggle "and I went to the pantry to get some eggs for the cake I was making, when I stumbled upon the body!"
According to Gregory "I was doin' the afternoon gardening, when I hears this awful scream, you see, a-commin' from the pantry area! Oh! I a-was nearl-e scared out o' me whits! And o'coarse I had to goes to see a-what was wrong, and the poor Miss's all terr'fied, and there was Charles, a-lyin' dead on th' ground!"
Ralf, the brother of the murdered, an unpleasant fellow told his story: "Well, I was kinda laying around the house, and I heard the scream, and I came running, and there was my brother on the ground! It was an unpleasant sight, he was all bloody, with a stab to the chest, then the police came to secure the area, and now you're here. But there is one more thing Inspector, I don't think it was a murder at all inspector, I believe he committed Suicide! "
The Inspector, having completed the interrogation, proceeded outside where the commanding officer, Officer Boyed, was waiting.
"Ah! Inspector, have you found the murderer if I was a murder, I mean."
"Yes I believe I have," replied the Inspector, " The murderer is......"
