I sat down in the grassy field outside of my family's house, feeling the soft damp grass on my skin. Today I felt like distancing myself from my family, like every other day. The only days I enjoy are days like this where the clouds gracefully dance along the sky, covering the landscape in shadows every once and awhile they got in the way of the sunlight. The sun was setting, giving off vibrant colors such as yellow, orange, pink, red, and even purple. I feel more at peace here, than at the house full of chaos I somehow have called home for many years.
I swung my arm from resting on my knee to laying in the grass, the rest of me laid down as well in one motion. My body sunk into the grass, it was like one of those comfy beds you lay on to try at a mattress store. As soon as I closed my eyes, I was interrupted by my dog, Anna, licking my face and my brother, Axel, yelling at me. His voice was muffled though, as I was pretty zoned out still. Axel shakes me by my shoulders, getting me out of my small daydream. I sat up, grabbing Axel's hand that reached out to me, he pulled me up.
"Tomorrow's school! You better get inside before mom beats us both." I responded to Axel by groaning immensely.
We both ran to the house, Anna trailing behind us. Axel pushed past me up the steps of the house and playfully laughed, "I beat you!"
To the left of us was my mom dragging my younger brother and sister, Myah and Nathan, off of the kitchen table, she greeted us as we walked in, "Hey boys! Can you help me put the kids to bed?" Axel and I looked at each other and shrugged, he took Nathan and I took Myah. She's the only girl out of 3 brothers. She's actually my favorite sibling, because she's so calm natured.
"Xavier?" Myah looked up at me. I looked down at her, seeing her little hand wrapped around my hand. I nodded and waited for a response.
"Can you read me a bedtime story, mommy doesn't read to me anymore." She gave me puppy dog eyes and a slight pout. I smiled, nodding my head once again. Her face lit up with happiness.
I reached her room, opening the door with my vacant hand and stepping inside. As soon as I let go of Myah's hand, she sprinted to her bed and quickly crawled into her sheets and blankets. She grasped the top of her favorite blanket; I grabbed the book sitting on her nightstand, it was a picture book.
After reading four or five pages to her, she was knocked out and sleeping. I took this as my advantage to leave her room and go to mine.
I laid in bed, tired and restless. I was going to have to run for track tomorrow, and my knee already is aching from the previous day. I'm just not going to worry too much about it and go to bed, hopefully it'll be gone by tomorrow morning.
Miscellaneous thoughts ran through my mind, such as tomorrow being friday, having to get up in the morning and try my best not to be late for track and my knee hurting. I feel as soon as I step into this house, I get my worries about the upcoming day, or the next couple of days. What if something could happen to my family, my friends, what about me? Maybe I'm just putting too much detail into my thoughts and overthinking. I'll just go to bed and forget all about my thoughts keeping me awake, one way or another.
My tiredness hit me, I fell asleep.
THE NEXT DAY
My alarm sounded off, making me jump right out of bed, my feet landed onto the floor with a loud thunk. My eyes followed over to my bed, there was dry grass on my pillowcase from my hair. The alarm next to my bed said it was 6 o'clock in the morning, thirty minutes to get ready, ten to eat, ten to get to school early. Perfect timing. I could already hear my mom downstairs trying to make Nathan sit down by yelling at him. It's like deja vu.
