"I have something to tell you." I turned on my side to face Jack, and all the color drained from his face.
I could see the wheels turning in his brain, and took his hand and sat up.
"Okay, what's up?" He smiled, trying to act like he wasn't freaking out.
"I have to go in for a surgery next Saturday." I let the statement hang in the air. Jack was still pale, and he still wasn't smiling.
"What're they gonna do?"
"They're gonna try and reshape my ears sovthey look normal," I said.
"But your ears are adorable." Jack chuckled half-heartedly, obviously trying to make himself feel better.
"Shut up." I kissed him, and he relaxed. We laid back down, facing each other.
"Are you sure it's gonna be safe? Couldn't things go wrong?" I sighed, stroking his cheek with my thumb.
"There's risk with any surgery, but I've had plenty, it's not that big a deal anymore."

I sighed, tears welling up before I could stop them. "Maybe your used to it, but my boyfriend going in for what- your thirtieth surgery?"
"Twenty- fourth," Auggie corrected.
"Twenty-fourth surgery is a big deal. I can't help thinking of everything that could go wrong." The tears slid openly down my cheeks now, and Auggie reached to wipe them away.
"Babe, I know you're scared. But I actually really want you to be there."
"Of course I'll be there. What time is the appointment?"
"3:30"

"August Pullman? We're ready for you." We all stood, Jack holding my left hand, and my mom holding the other. Via and dad walked behind us.
"Okay, I'm gonna have you put on this gown, and we'll take you when you're ready okay?" The nurse asked.
"Yeah, thanks," I said.
I changed, and the nurse came back in.
"Okay. They're ready for you upstairs. Unfortunately your family can only come was far as the elevator."
"That's okay, we're used to waiting rooms," my mom said. I noticed Jack's fearful look, and I squeezed his hand. He gave me a small smile in return.
"You ready?" The nurse asked.
"Yeah, I'm ready."
"We stopped at the elevator, are everyone was crying. Mom , dad, and Via kissed my forehead, and moved back to let Jack talk to me.
"I'm gonna be fine," I whispered.
"I know." Jack sniffled, and I smiled.
"I love you."
"I love you too." He kissed me, and we didn't even worry about all the people around. I squeezed his hand on more time, as the nurse pushed the gurney into the elevator.

I sat next to Via in the waiting room, wringing my hands together.
"Hey, he's gonna be fine. I've been to about fifteen other surgeries. He always comes out okay." Via put her arm around me, and I nodded.
I know, but I'm too focused on what could go wrong."
"I try to focus on homework to distract myself. Calculus," she finished, when I gave her a confused look.
"That sucks. I also didn't bring anything with me so..."
"Jack, do you want me to drive you home so you can get some sleep? We're probably gonna be here for four hours," Auggie's mom said.
"It's okay, I want to stay."
"Okay, as long as your mom's okay with it."
"Yeah, I texted her before."
Four hours later, a doctor came out into the waiting room. "Mr. and Mrs. Pullman?" Auggie's parents stood up, and I traded a look with Via.
"Auggie's awake. The surgery was successful. I'd like you all to come see him so we can discuss a recovery plan."
We followed the doctor into Auggie's room, and he smiled at us as soon as we walked in. A thick white bandage was wrapped around his head.
"Hey guys."
"Hi Auggie, I'm Doctor Pratt. I brought your family so we could all discuss how to proceed from here on out."
The doctor explained that Auggie had to stay in the hospital overnight, and how he couldn't go to school for at least a week. He also explained how to change Auggie's bandage. After he was finished, Auggie turned to his family.
"Can I have a minute along with Jack please?" The three of them traded a look, and his dad nodded.
"Sure. Just let me know when I'm driving you home Jack.
"Got it, Mr. P." They left, and Auggie sat up.
"Come sit." He moves over, and I sat.
"See? I told you I'd be fine." I laughed, kissing his forehead.
"I knew you would."
"Think about it, a week off of school, we can hang out everyday!"
"Yeah, if I can convince my mom," I laughed again."
"I'm sure you can." I smiled, taking in my boyfriend's beautiful face.
"I love you August Pullman," I said.
