"only three-hundred and seventy-six days of sixth form left. yeah!"

florence choked on a laugh as she heard the two boys approaching, bikes in turn.

"counting away your life already, eric?" she asked in a sarcastic tone, though her eyes held a joking softness.

"counting down the days you have left to proclaim your love for jack—"

with wide eyes, the blonde girl covered his mouth with her hands, frantically looking around for witnesses. "shush! i trusted you with that information."

otis chuckled, patting her on the shoulder. "anyone who looks at you when he's in the same room knows."

"well," florence sighed, grinning up at him, "good thing nobody pays attention to me."

then, within seconds, a flying coke can and a looming adam groff had florence backing up slightly, hiding behind otis milburn's shoulder for protection.

"deals off. i'll see you," the scarily tall boy pointed at eric, "later."

florence let out a deep breath of relief when he left, stepping out from her safe house. "i need to buy a helmet—"

"um, guys? maeve wiley's coming straight over here."

and as eric and otis fussed over the approaching female, florence began walking away from them.

"hi, flor,"  maeve greeted as they passed each other.

"hey maeve," she replied, not surprised when eric came running after her mere moments later.

"jackson marchetti lover, wait there!"

i didn't see you today. i heard someone say there was a swim thing.
it wasn't a good day.
