I woke up in an alley, my body bloodied and bruised, my clothes torn and tattered. I couldn't fathom what had happened to me. Those people I thought were my friends? I guess they really weren't after all. I tried to stand but an immense pain clouded my thoughts. Looking down at my leg, I saw it had a large bruise on the ankle. Looking around, I didn't see anything to help me up. Sighing, I tired to drag myself towards the road, but to no avail. I had checked my pockets, but someone must've stolen my phone. So, instead, I curled up in a ball and awaited the worst. When I awoke again, it was dawn, and the sky was faded orange. Sitting up, I looked at my ankle; the bruising had gone down a little, but not much. Getting to my feet, I started limping to the road, when a voice sounded from behind me.
"Sara?"
Spinning around as fast as my ankle would allow me, I saw a tall girl standing at 50 yards down the alley. Her long dark hair hung in two braids down her shoulders, brown eyes wide in confusion.
"What are you doing here?"
I shook my head, signaling I didn't want to talk about it. But this girl had once been my best friend, who I had told everything to. She walked up to me, put her arm around my shoulder, and walked me through her garage and into her house.
"Mom!" She called, "I'm not going to school today! I'm feeling sick!" The girl smiled at me, and guided me up the steps to her bedroom, gently sitting me down on the bed. She sat down next to me, and glanced over.
"Sara, what happened?"
I hesitated before answering, "I-I it's nothing, really I'll be fine Aspen, just was taking a walk."
She snorted then, "oh please, Sara, you don't take walks, and you look absolutely dreadful."
"I'd rather not talk about it."
I looked around nervously, when her hand reached my shoulder, I flinched.
"Sara, tell me what happened."
"Please, Aspen, don't."
I looked at her pleadingly, and she gave up. Sighing, she grabbed a blanket and rapped it around me. I was thankful, but just nodded. We sat there for a while, soaking up the silence with pleasure. Sighing, everything poured out of me;
"At my birthday party last Friday, I was talking to Nash, but Irvine was being a shithead and wouldn't stop bugging me. So, when he grabbed my arm, I got super pissed off, an-and something happened." I paused, then continued on, "My arms went up in flames, and it didn't even hurt. Then yesterday at lunch, Tom and Josh pestered me about it, and I got pissed off, it happened again. Except this time they chased me. Tom, Josh, and Irvine tied me up and beat me. I-I woke up in the alley yesterday, but my ankle was too swollen to move.."
Aspen stared at me in awe, and tears filled her eyes, "oh Sara, that's awful. I can't believe anyone would do that to you. There's nothing wrong with being...different, a mutant."
"Really? Because everyone else seems to think there's one!" I yelled.
"Sara, honestly I think it's fricken awesome! You're like the Human Torch!"
"No, I'm not."
