Raman is studying for an MBA in the UK & has returned to his ancestral home to spend his semester one end holidays with his mother & grandfather. Raman whom has barely been in Amritsar for a day or two is told by his mother that she wants him to marry her friend's daughter, Ishita. Raman doesn't have it in him to blatantly refuse his mother. Therefore, he decides he'll speak to his Dada first thing tomorrow morning.
Raman enters his Dadaji's room whom is busy reading his morning newspaper. Dadaji's eyes befall Raman and he calls his grandson to him. Raman dashes to his grandad with his mind made up that he will refuse to accept the alliance between himself and Ishita. However, before he can even utter a word, Dadaji begins praising Ishita in a manner which compels Raman to keep quiet and accept his ailing grandfather's wish.
"Raman Puttar, Ishita badi changi kudi hai. Uss vich koi khaami, koi burai hai hi nahi. Ik vaari tera teh usda rishta judh gaya teh iss ghar vich khushiyan hi khushiyan hongi. Teh phir, teri Maa di vi yahi khawahish hai. Ussdi khushi ke liye hi maan jaa."
Raman is closest to his mother; widowed Santosh Bhalla. Raman doesn't have it in him to deny his mother's word and not finding any excuse to refuse, other than the completion of his studies and job search; he agrees to having an engagement ceremony. The only problem here is that he hasn't met Ishita yet.
Ishita is a business graduate residing in Punjab, working in an SME. She is the only daughter of Amar and Avneet Singh. Ishita is an under confident, 24 year old who struggles in interacting with people. Avneet and Santosh are good friends and Santosh takes it upon herself to make sure that the responsibility of Ishita gets off her parents' shoulders.
Raman knows that his family is orthodox so he doesn't even ask his mother if he can meet Ishita. He decides to wait till evening when he'll finally get to meet his life partner.
On the other hand, there's Ishita who's so nervous for today evening that she's profusely sweating. Her mother comes into her room and gives her a beautiful red lehenga to wear for the evening. She leaves without even looking at Ishita whom desperately wants to share her feelings with someone.
It's eight in the evening and guests have gathered for the grand engagement ceremony of Raman Kumar Bhalla and Ishita Avneet Singh.
Raman tries to make eye contact with Ishita but her eyes are downcast and she seems lost. Raman wants to go to her, he wants to talk to her but he doesn't get the opportunity. They are told to exchange rings and Raman senses reluctance in her body language.
He decides to talk to her once the guests start to leave one by one. However, her parents take her away, thanking Toshi ji and Dadaji.
Raman also retires to his bedroom but sleep is faraway from his eyes. His mother enters his room and he asks her all that is running in his mind since the past few hours.
"Maa I feel jaise Ishita iss rishte se khush nahi hai."
Toshi ji, whom is oblivious to the havoc in Ishita's mind, shuns Raman's thoughts saying that "yeh rishta Ishita ki razamandi se hua hai Puttar. Tu fikar naa kar."
Raman is dissatisfied and decides to ask Ishita directly. He wakes up early morning and after asking a neighbor where Amar Singh's haveli is, Raman climbs up to Ishita's bedroom window and asks her if he can enter her room.
Ishita panics, worrying her parents will find out and Raman understands her without her saying a word and tells her that he'll handle them so she doesn't need to worry.
