-"What are you doing here?"
When that question was finally asked after a minute staring at each other, I had no idea how I could answer. Not only because I was drenched and half naked in front of my company's shareholder, but also because I was trying to figure out how in the world I did fail to notice earlier that this man was such a damn fine creature.
The light in his eyes at this moment was anything like the playful one of this morning. He was standing there looking at me like a curious little thing, yet I couldn't help but stare at his unbelievably attracting features. Though dressed as casually as you would expect from a normal person relaxing at home, the sexiness dripping from his whole persona was almost choking me. His lustrous jet black hair strands were nonchalantly falling at each side of his face, contrasting well with his deep marine blue eyes. Have they always been this long? I could have sworn they were shorter this morning when they were brushed back. I found him somewhat attractive this morning already, but this was a whole new level.Stupid alcohol.Unable to tame my curiosity my eyes traveled up and down his athletic body. To my defense, his silky shirt was leaving enough material for my imagination to run wild. How old was he? Late 2o's? Early 30's? How could a man this young be a shareholder of one of the a biggest broadcasting company of the industry? And why was he living next door?? What should I do now?
-"What are you doing all naked in font of my apartment, Miss Barnes?
-"I..I am not all naked!...I was taking a bath when my apartment went completely dark and I didn't know what to do..."
-"So you figured you'd present yourself still wet with a 50 inches towel barely covering your breast to your executive neighbor."
-"Excuse me??"
The ridiculousness of the the situation froze me on the spot. A necessary evil to help me collect my emotions, a temporary adrenaline rush to forget about my fear of darkness and run back to my apartment.
- " How did you know where I live?" His eyes were calmly fixing me, as if they could nose out a secret out of mine.
Now this was a step further into craziness. I could understand the surprise; I myself was shocked and had many questions, but this man was almost accusing me of scheming a whole power shortage. What else? did I also rent the apartment next to his to present myself at his door at 11 PM for God knows what intentions? What kind of world was he living in? This was enough for me.
- " Look closely at the situation Mister executive neighbor. I did not climb up 10 floors to present myself in such a private attire to an unknown person. I live next door and required help, but I could understand how rude it might have appeared to you.If you would excuse me." I took the last two self esteem dots I had left and turned back to my apartment.
- "Not so fast, Miss neighbor. What happened ?"
Now what? Do you want to help or not? This man was confusing me on so many levels! As if he could read the confusion in my eyes he walked to my apartment without waiting for my answer.
The rooms were still filled with complete darkness and contrasted well with the city lights shining outside. I walked cautiously to the balcony, almost as if I was entering the place for the first time. It's true that I have always been afraid of darkness, for as long as I could remember. Not because of some fairytale's monster in the closet, but more because of the feeling of emptiness and helplessness that would overwhelm me every time the lights turns off. A very bad post traumatic stress I carried along with me and maybe hold onto as the only way to remember a past self that holds my true identity...
In another setting I would have said this was a very beautiful moment. I haven't realized how calm everything looked from my apartment. I never had time to enjoy the things around me and I knew I had to change that somehow, but ...
The city seemed distant, yet incredibly close. It felt like I could reach the floor in an instant, had I tried to jump from this height. The wind blowing through my hair, the fresh breeze on my face, the siren sounds we could hear almost constantly, two.. now three couples kissing on the streets while others walked past them, the endless ballet of passerby and cars, night joggers and traffic jams. The city that never sleeps indeed.
- "Where are the dismatics ?"
- "The what?" I was caught daydreaming again.
-"You should dress warmer." He said, pointing at my exposed tights.
-"I know very well how to dress in my own apartment but thank you."
I made sure everything in my tone made him understand his opinion was unwanted. He was true on that fact however and I hated myself for siding with him. I spent more time than I should wet with a tiny towel on and the night was far from hot. I went to my bedroom in hope of finding anything I could easily put on my back, but all I could find was an even tinier bathrobe.
- "How is that any different from that stupid towel.." I said to myself.
- "Do you need help getting warmer?" his raspy voice made me aware of his presence behind me. Since when was he watching ?
-" Was I being impolite? My bad." He chuckled. Nothing in his voice or attitude looked sorry at all. His eyes were inspecting every inch of my body and his smirk made it clear that he liked what he saw.
- "I was trying be be considerate" he continued, getting closer to me " I do not want our new 'resident manager' to be sick on her first day"
My nameless guest was having fun torturing me so I decided not to be a victim of his jokes and walked closer too.
-" You will not need to worry for a day about my qualifications as manager as soon as I start the job. Believe me, I know how to deliver."
My fierce mannerisms did not make him flinch at all but I knew I made my resolves heard. All attractive that he was I could not let him question my abilities at work because of a stupid power shortage.
-"Right?" He chuckled. I realized my intimidation tactics were turning against me when instead of stopping, he mimicked me and kept walking closer.
-" Wh..Whatever power circuits you are looking for could not be found in this room so you might as well go back to your place. I will have people fix it tomorrow morning. Thank you for your help." I said angrily.
That's it. He would chuckle, maybe tell another joke about the situation and leave right? It's not like he looked very interested in finding a way to solve the issue anyways. All he did was inspecting my apartment, as if to make sure I really was living there. Something about him felt oddly familiar, a feeling that was shaking me to the core. Very well aware of his influence on me, my unexpected guest kept on getting closer, until a bump on my back rang the end of my escape. I was cornered between two walls, one made of pure concrete and the other of living male testosterone with abs that looked even...harder? His simple presence was completely overwhelming me with feelings I never felt before. Like a fire diffusing in my entire body.
-"I wasn't expecting you to be this...provocative, Miss Barnes"
-"You seem to really love playing around, don't you? Who the fuck are you??"
-"Hm." He drew his face closer. The atmosphere was intoxicated with his male presence.
I gasped for air when his skin touched mine. Instinctively, my hands went on his abdomen as a defensive reflex, only to be electrified by his perfectly chiseled muscles. Before I found some other ineffective defensive trick, he murmured a few words that left me speechless for good.
-" Luke. Luke Black."
My eyes widened at the sound of that name. I knew his voice was oddly familiar, but I could have never expected to meet him one day.
