My day started out pretty normal. Got to school early, lessons, lunch, more lessons, fell asleep during bio and yeap,it was really just one of those let's get it over and done with days. Until I met that homeless guy. Worst. Mistake. Ever.
"Can I have a large strawberry milkshake and two chocolate brownies please?" The woman with dyed blonde hair asked in a fake accent. I scrunched up my face.
She had on way too much perfume, her hair was fake, you could see that the roots were a dark brown. Her eyes, too green to be real and the rest of her body, well, let's just say it was too perfect. Plastic surgery. Definitely.
And to top it all off,her shirt wasn't exactly covering what it was supposed to be covering. A lot of her, err, cleavage showed through. I tried not to gag and screwed up my face into what I hoped was a smile.
"Sure! No problem at all miss," I replied and quickly walked to the counter before I puked from the overwhelming smell of her perfume.
I worked at this quaint little cafe where everything was super classy. They only accepted blondes for the job. Real ones, not those ones like the woman I just talked to. We have to wear this lacey black dress with a skirt that reaches just above the knees. And all this cafe served were cakes so delicately made, they almost melted on your tongue.
Only the richest could afford anything here. Me? I couldn't afford even a nibble of one of the cheapest cakes here. I worked here everyday after school and I took the night shift as well for extra money. I was in a boarding school and completely on my own. My parents and I had a rocky relationship. I think they probably would have disowned me by now. Oh well...
As I was saying,I called out to the chef here. A cute guy with messy dark brown hair and the greenest eyes you ever saw.
"Hey Nick, two brownies and a large strawberry milkshake please," I told him over the counter. He nodded and disappeared into the kitchen. I sighed from tiredness and checked my reflection in one of the numerous mirrors in the little cafe. My long blonde hair was pulled back into a ponytail but my bangs had come free and swept across my forhead, just above my eyes. There were bags under my big blue eyes. I didn't like my eyes. They were HUGE. Literally. I looked like a distant relation of an owl or something. Eww.
Ding!
A bell rang from the kitchen. I spun around and walked over to the counter, smoothing down the skirt of my dress as I did so.

Several hours later,my shift was finally over. I pulled off my uniform and changed into a T-shirt and a comfy pair of jeans. As I stuffed the lacey dress untidily into my bag,I turned off all the lights in the cafe, said goodbye to Nick and headed home. As I was walking back,I pulled my hair loose and shook out my hair. The city lights shone overhead and made the dark as bright as day. My sneakers made silent thumps on the pavement as I swiftly walked back. I was afraid of the night and what lurked in it.
Suddenly, out of the corner of my eye,I noticed a man wandering around aimlessly under a street light. He looked lost and was constantly mumbling to himself. It was a cold windy night and he was shivering slightly under a threadbare flannel jacket. I approached him and lightly touched his arm. He jumped a bit and turned to look at me,startled.
"Hey,mister, are you alright?" I asked politely. He smiled at me and nodded his head.
"Yes I am,young miss. Now you best be on your way back before something bad happens" He said calmly with a smile.
I don't know what got into me.Maybe it was the Christmas spirit as there was only a week left till Christmas. Or maybe it was because there was a time when I was homeless too. When my parents kicked me out of the house. And I knew how he felt. Before I could change my mind,I held out my hand and said, "Hello,my name is Gwen.
