After Cedric doesn't make the quidditch team he is angry and upset. When Ron makes the team, he uses every opportunity to rub it in "Cormac"'s face, especially after the first match, which makes ced angrier.
Ron tries to fight Cedric after finding out he had a thing with Hermione. Ron is a jealous fit and yells at Hermione and Cedric steps in, and wraps his arm around Hermione asking if she's okay. "You- you two- McLaggen?! Hermione, how low did your expectations go to date that- thing?! I didn't expect you to be so shallow, Hermione, I thought you were smart."
"she is! You just have mush for brains, Weasley, you couldn't see something great if it was stood right in front of you, so don't you go acting as if Hermione's done something wrong, because she hasn't."
