I shot off the couch covered in sweat. My breath was heavy and shallow and I had tears in my eyes.
"What the hell was that." I thought," I need some water.."
I got off the couch and headed to the kitchen. I got out a cup and filled it with water from the sink. It wasn't the cleanest but it's not toilet water. I drank the water and headed to the bathroom rubbing my eye.
I turned on the faucet and splashed my face with the cold water.
" What was that dream?" I began to question the dream I had more and more," What did that dre-." I stopped mid sentence remembering a book I owned that could help. I opened the cabinet and shuffled through the items inside. I stopped once I found what I was looking for. It was a leathery notebook with the title, DREAMS AND WHAT THEY MEAN , I had found the book by chance at the library and decided to check it out. I had completely forgotten about it until now.
I flipped through the pages looking for what the dream I had could mean, until I stopped on a page titled ANXIETY DREAMS. I looked through the lengthy text, reading aloud.

"An anxiety dream is an unpleasant dream which can be more disturbing than a nightmare. Anxiety dreams are characterized by the feelings of unease, distress, or apprehension in the dreamer upon waking. ...Anxiety dreams may be caused by childhood trauma, or an adult dealing with conflict."

I stared at the page, the words jumping at me. My back hit the wall and I slid down. I remembered my dream going through it the best I could... the worried mother's voice and the child's plea for his parents to wake up. Tears began to fall down my cheeks as it all came rushing back to me. I held himself in my arms crawling into a small ball in front of the bathroom door. I started to silently cry as I recalled the events of the memory. The gun shots, the blood, and the dead bodies...oh god the dead bodies. My breathing sharpened and my head felt dizzy. I couldn't think straight and my whole body was shaking. I tried to calm down and catch my breath but I just couldn't stop hyperventilating.
I counted to three in my head and tried to calm down, taking in deep breaths to try and stop breathing fast. After a while of this I began to recollect my senses and was able to breath again. I slowly got up and put the book back in the cabinet closing it slowly, my arms still shaking. I exited the bathroom and headed to the kitchen still shaken. I got out some cereal and milk, and poured myself and Sophia some cereal. I quickly finished and went to wake up Sophia.
I knocked on Sophia's door and heard some shuffling before the door opened reveling Sophia in her small dog onesie. I smiled at this completely forgetting I just had a mental breakdown in the bathroom. Sophia always made me feel better.
" Good morning sleepyhead breakfast is ready." I laughed
Sophia yawned," Good morning.." she was still half asleep. She walked to the kitchen and started eating her cereal. I looked at my flip phone to see if there were any new messages, as I was looking a new message from the boss popped up. Immediately I internally shit himself. I opened the message hoping to god it was nothing more than just a mistake and he didn't mean to text me.
" Samuel get your lazy ass down here. The whore Caroiline decided it was a good fucking idea to not show up to damn work today so your gonna be taken her hours. Time is money Samuel so you better be on DAMN TIME OR ELSE I'LL PERSONALLY HAND YOUR ASS TO YA GOT IT!?!? And I won't be as kind as before you fag."
" shit...." I silently cursed to myself. I looked around the living room for my bag. I rushed over to it and searched for my work clothes. I was frantically searching until I looked down at my clothes and realized I was already wearing them. I sighed and got up closing my bag.
" Hey Sophia I'm sorry but I just got a last minute call for work so I have to go. Can you manage while I head off?" I questioned.
" I got this big brother!" Sophia said as she carried her dish to the sink. I smiled and waved goodbye leaving to work. I speed walked to work not wanting to be late and headed over to the punch in machine. I punched in and headed over to Caroline's station. Caroline worked in the back where they unloaded the trucks full of our stock. I singed in under Caroline's check box as her substitute. I sat on a nearby bench and waited for work to start.
After a painstakingly long day of back torture I headed home. As I walked home I heard a group of people talking about a robber that had recently been hitting the neighbor hood hard. I began to worry and started to jog home. I got to my door and pull out my keys.
I put the keys into the door and-
