In two distant cities, two babies were born to two different couples, a baby boy for one of the couple and a baby girl for the other. The first couple named their baby, John, while the second couple named their baby, Mary. John grew up as a strong and intelligent boy, his family lived in Los Angeles and Mary, a beautiful and talented young maiden, lived in Amsterdam. John's parents were both doctors in a famous hospital. Mary's father works as a businessman, and her mother, a housewife. No sooner did Mary's father felt weak after long hours of working, and after a consultation, they learned that he was seriously sick and needed an operation as soon as possible. Mary's family could afford to buy their daily needs but they are not rich and they couldn't afford the operation. Mary was forced to work in a restaurant as a waitress to earn money for the operation. In the other side of the city, John, a teen who is used to hanging out with his friends, came to Amsterdam to have a look around the city and to taste the food in the city, they came to the restaurant where Mary was working. Meanwhile, Mary received a message from her mother that her father really needed to have the operation and his condition is getting worse.
"Excuse me, waitress?" John said as they settled around the table.
"Y-yes sir, w-what is it?" Mary asked while holding back her tears.
"Are you crying miss?" John asked.
"What would you like, sir?" Mary said, ignoring the question John asked.
"You are crying. Why?"
"N-nothing sir, what-" Mary paused as she tried to hold back her tears but failed, she ran out of the scene trying not to draw attention from the customers.
"Dude, what was that about?" Fred, John's best friend said.
"I, I'm not sure.." John said.
"Let's just call another waiter, shall we?" Fred said as he signaled to get another waiter.
"Who was that crying waitress?" John asked the rushing waiter.
"That was Mary, she's just new here". the waiter said. "We heard that she's working to earn money for her father in the hospital."
"Could I talk to her?"
"Dude, what is this?" Fred stopped John."We're here to eat and roam around, not to be social workers."
John didn't mind Fred, he followed the waiter to the back of the restaurant where Mary was sitting in an old table, crying her heart out.
"Excuse me, Mary? Mary, right?"
Mary rose up and tried to hide her tears.
"Yes, I'm Mary, what are you doing here?"
"I'm John, I noticed you were crying so I asked he waiter why and he told me about your father. I hope you don't mind."
"So why are you here?"
"Well, I just wanted to ask you if you needed some help. My parents are doctors and maybe we could help you."
"R-really?" Mary asked with hope. "Are you really willing to help us?"
"Of course, where is this hospital?"
"The one near the church?"
"Really? that's the hospital my parents own!"
"Then you must be so rich." Mary said with a smile.
"Not really, come on. my parents are in town right now. I guess your father needs the operation as soon as possible?"John stood up and took Mary's hand.
"Why are you doing this? You met me just now."
" Let's just say I don't want to see waitresses crying."
"And your friends?"
"Don't mind them. Come on."
"Are you sure?"
"Are you going to accompany me to your father so he can get well or are you going to argue with me all day? Come on!"
John and Mary headed for the hospital while sharing stories about their lives and families.
"Your pretty lucky to be the son of rich parents." Mary said with a smile.
"You have no idea how much pressure I get from my parents. They always want me to be perfect. they want me to be a doctor but I really want to be a.."
"What?" Mary said as John stopped talking.
"Never mind." John said avoiding the question."What room?"
"Excuse me?"
"I mean in what room is your father confined?"
"Oh. Room 208. Are you really sure you want to help?"
"Of course, I told you, I really don't want to see waitresses crying their hearts out."
The two laughed while entering the room where Mary's father was confined.
