It seemed as if the scene in the dining room had frozen and I was momentarily a ghost staring at this whole situation from afar. The first thing that crossed my mind was mainly incoherent. Mainly; what’s? hows? And maybe the occasionally swear word. How could someone forget to mention to their kid that the man she was marrying had a son? And the way she said it made it all the more unbelievable. I finally returned to my body and looked from my mother to Harrison then reluctantly to Vincent who was staring into his plate as if looking for an explanation.
“What do you mean a small detail? This is not a small detail. This is a big detail, almost the size of America and Canada put together. How could you forget to mention that he had a son?” that happened to have seen me naked I added mentally.
“Vanessa, please. It’s not like you were the only one out of the know. Vincent didn’t know either. We honestly thought we were doing you a favour anyway” She was trying her best not to look me in the eyes
“What kind of favour was that? Oh I know I’ll get married to some rich man and forget to tell my only child that she was going to have a brother. Well, gee thanks mum” Sarcasm was emanating from my voice
“Vanessa there is no need to get unpleasant with your mother” Harrison interjected. I shot him a death glare and I swore if he wasn’t so big I saw he had just sunk back a little.
“Vanessa. Please, can we just eat dinner peacefully? We’ll talk about this later” She looked at me pleadingly. I loved my mother, I truly did and when she looked so vulnerable I couldn’t be angry at her but it will come back to me. I wasn’t letting go of this anytime soon. I mumbled something which my mother interpreted as a confirmation to continue with dinner. If it hadn’t been for that previous revelation I might have enjoyed the food. It was grilled salmon with all the extras and I had managed to get a sip of champagne too. I could so get use to this. Minus the whole perverted step brother.
During the whole dinner there was an awkward silence as we all ate. Only opening our mouths to have idle chit chat though that was mainly my mother and Harrison. Though Vincent was just as quiet as me, every time I looked at him he had the same smirk on his face and had caught me staring. He continued with his games until it escalated to him nudging me with his leg. It was like he couldn’t get a hint. He nudged me once more and I gave him the finger whilst our parents were talking. He nudged me again, this time I turned to face him.
“What do you want?” I asked clearly frustrated
“About earlier… you know the whole me walking in on you in the shower” I nodded, he spoke as I wasn’t in the bathroom my self
“I… apologize” he sighed at himself whilst shaking his head, it must have really killed him to say those words
“Fine. Just don’t make a habit of it” And just when I was beginning to think he was an okay guy he spoke again
“Not to say that I didn’t enjoy the view. But maybe you should start going to the gym, now that I’m going to be seen with you in public after those two get hitched.” He was officially an asshole. I took up my glass of water and poured it over his lap causing him to shoot up as the cold water and ice went through his trouser material. I smiled sweetly as he glared at me before storming out of the room. My mother and Harrison were looking at the door when Vince disappeared before turning towards me. I shrugged innocently and smiled devilishly to myself when I looked down at my plate.
After finishing my meal I retreated back upstairs into my room. I was not looking forward to the next five weeks of staying in this house. I knew we were still in London, but personally I had never seen this area of London before and I wasn’t about to venture out and get lost. The last thing I wanted to do was look stupid in front of my soon to be new family members and their staff. I closed the door behind me and walked towards my bed which took years. It was only 9:30, but the moving had tired me out and I was ready to fall into my bed and not wake up until hunger got the better of me.
