AN: I know it's kind of a long one-shot, but I think you'll like it anyway.(Also, this is my first fan fiction, so please don't judge lol)

It was the Battle of Hogwarts and finally Hermione was alone, not having to fight anymore for just a second, though she was ready for anything that came to her.

All of a sudden, she heard a fight going on somewhere around her. She immediately snapped her head in every direction, and saw no one. She heard spells being cast like crazy and lots of grunting and heavy breathing.

Immediately, she recognized the grunts. She knew who they were coming from, just not where. And in that moment she wanted to know where they were coming from, so she could run to him and protect him. But then the noises stopped, and this scared Hermione more than anything: what if it was because he was dead? What if whoever he was fighting was coming for her.

But then she heard that heavy, relentless breathing, and she knew it was him, and she called out.

"Draco?" For a moment, there was no response, and she was scared for a moment, again, thinking that she had made the wrong decision, and that that heavy breathing came from whoever he fought not him, which meant that he was dead. She sobbed for a moment, when she heard him call back.

"Mione? Is that you?"

They could hear each other, somewhere nearby, not exactly sure where. Draco rounded the corner. And there she was, for a split second, before she rounded the corner as well, not having seen him. Then she stopped in her tracks, because she had seen something, or rather someone, out of the corner of her eye. She slowly stepped back, wand held cautiously in front of her. She turned quickly, wand still out in front of her as a precaution.

But when she turned and there he was: his icy gray eyes looking right at her hazel ones. And as soon as she realized it was him, she ran to him and kissed him, wand still in her hand. Draco dropped his wand and kissed her back, glad that she was alive, and even more glad that she was with him, and for that moment it was just the two of them in the world: time felt like it had frozen as the brightest witch of her age and the Slytherin prince looked each other in the eyes.

But they were both taken out of the moment when a loud explosion sounded off, not far from where they were. Draco summoned his wand to his hand, immediately grabbed Hermione's hand and ran with her. To where? Hermione didn't know, but she knew that she trusted him, so she just went with it.

And just as Draco began to slow down, Hermione stopped in her tracks and held him back.

"Draco, where are you going?"

"I- I don't know."  Draco said, finally realizing he didn't have a destination, and that if she hadn't stopped him, they would have just kept on running.

"Draco, we can't just keep on running forever. We're in the middle of a war and we have people to protect," Hermione said, and then she saw that conflict in his eyes again, that conflict that she would see in the moments where they talked about family, or friends, that conflict that hit him every time he was forced to choose sides.

Draco knew which side he stood on, and he knew it wasn't where the loyalty of his family or his friends lied. He knew that what they fought for was wrong, and beyond stupid.

"Do we, though?" Draco asked. Hermione quickly replied.

"Draco, you don't have to fight for something you don't believe in, and you don't have to fight for people whom you don't believe either. I know-" Draco cut her off.

"No. No, you don't know Hermione. You don't know what it's lke when your family raises you with stupid ideals that you've known all along were wrong. You don't know what it's like to want to take care of your family, and your friends, when it means pretending, when it means pretending to believe in what's evil and what's wrong, and when above all it means that I would have to betray the one person I love most in the world, and the one person who has understood me most in the world." Draco looked Hermione in the eyes at these last few words.
