The night was silent, only the trotting hooves on the dessert sand could be heard. The sun was setting behind the horizon and the horses had begun to tire.
"Hey, Gyro."
Johnny caught the other mans attention.
"We should start setting up."
Gyro craned his neck to get a good look at the last of the sun over the surrounding sand dunes, before nodding.
"Good idea."

The two of them stopped their horses around a flat area of sad, and began to set up their sleeping bags.

Johnny lowered himself off of his horse and grabbed his sleeping bag out of his luggage, pulling himself over towards where Gyro had set his up and did the same.

"Have we got enough firewood?" Johnny asked, glancing up at Gyro.
"Yup, should do." He replied, walking over to his bag.
Johnny let out a small sigh and wrapped his blanket around his shoulders, protecting himself from the nights approaching chill.

Once Gyro had managed to get a fire going, Johnny huddled close to it, heating himself up. Gyro brought out some leftovers they had stored and ate them together, having their usual meaningless chit-chat in between bites. Once they was done, the two of them moved on to playing card games further into the night.

"Hey! Your totally cheating!" Gyro laughed at Johnny, trying to sneak a look at his cards.
"Nah, I think I'm just better than you." He retorted, teasing the other.
"Psshhh, yeah right." Chucked Gyro at Johnny's response. "There's no way! I'm just warming up!"

Playfully punching Johnny in the arm, Gyro chuckled and Johnny laughed at their silly argument, followed by Johnny lightly punching Gyro back.

"Pffft- sure...."

The two laughed with each other, their laughter the only sound for miles across the empty night desert. For both of them, it was a pleasant sound. They enjoyed each other's company and laughter, and every moment they spent together. Both of them let themselves get closer to one another than to anyone before. These moments felt different to any other feeling they'd had before.

Discarding his cards and letting himself flop back onto the sand, Johnny let out a content sigh as he stared up into the stars. Gyro did the same and moved closer to Johnny, joining him on the ground.

"Whatchya looking at?" Gyro asked, following Johnny's gaze and looking up into the sky.

"Nothing really."
"Sounds interesting."
"Hah, it actually kind of is."

Johnny outstretched an arm pointed to the stars.
"There are a couple visible constellations, but the stars are just really beautiful by themselves." He smiled. "It's always relaxed me, coming out at night and staring up into the stars. Just doing nothing for once. It's a nice feeling."

Gyro gazed into the stars just as Johnny was. It was nice. The stars scattered across the night sky shone dimly, but just bright enough to be clear to the eye.

"Yeah, it is nice." Gyro agreed. "But when I need to relax, I have my teddy bear to hug and keep me company."
"You dork-"
Johnny chuckled.
"Well you can't say much!"

The two laughed while playfully teasing each other, a happy blush spreading across their faces. As the laughter died down and they let out a last few amused sighs, they gazed at one another and simply took in every feature of the others smiling face.

Ah fuck, he's so pretty....

Johnny thought to himself. Johnny truly admired Gyro, and was thankful to have him as a friend. Although that was all they were, there were multiple occasions where Johnny couldn't help but think of him as more.
There was a certain point where he had to face it;

He had totally fallen for Gyro.

As each day went by, and more and more time was spent with just the two of them, they let themselves become closer than they had let anyone before. They had true and pure trust, admiration, and love for one another.

But neither of them knew if the other could ever feel the same way.

A long silence passed between the two of them as their smiles slowly calmed, before they acknowledged how long they'd been staring at one another. Johnny let out a nervous laugh and turned his face away.
"Aha.. right.."
Gyro nervously laughed with his and slowly sat up. Dusting himself off, he suggested that they started getting ready to sleep.
"Right, yeah, we should probably get ready for bed soon."
"Agreed" Johnny sat himself up besides him.

Gyro gave Johnny a quick kind smile before getting up to go get ready. Johnny scratched the back of his neck and stared down at the ground as Gyro walked away.

Fuck. I need to tell him soon.
