Clara Simmons had passionate blue eyes and a charming smile with a hint of sarcasm lurking at the corners of her lips. She lived in a suburban place, completely unpopular and without friends. Every day she would come home from school, drop her backpack on the tiled floor, and rush upstairs to her room. Her bed was a turquoise color, with small hearts decorated in repeating patterns. The walls were blue and bordered at the edges with a light green trim. Her entire house had a homy, warm feeling about it. You would think she was quite satisfied with her life.

You would think. Clara was quite desperate to get out into the world and to explore the crevices of unseen worlds. She dreaded the droning days that took so long to pass by. All she wanted was to be able to spread her wings and fly.

Her parents were the sweet and childish people you would long to spend every moment with, but this was not the case with Clara. She was feisty and rude, and eager to escape to her room when the second came when she was no longer needed. At the dinner table she would scrape her fork along the sides of her plate until the meal was over. Then she would help clean the dishes. As soon as her work was complete, she would hurry upstairs. She would not spend more time than necessary with her family.

The day came when she was confronted with her problems. "Clara," her father began. "You're twenty now, and it's time for you to see the world." He paused, almost waiting for a reply, but all he got was a tight smirk. "I'm afraid to say we're kicking you out."

"Finally! I've waited so long for you to tell me that! I thought I was destined to stay here my entire life until I was an old maid and no longer able to move," remarked Clara. She swung her legs under her chair and giggled a contented laugh of merriness.

Her mother forced a timid smile. "Yes, dear, it's time. Go pack your things. Your flight leaves in an hour."

Clara whooped at the top of her lungs and scurried up the stairs to get her bags ready. A half an hour later, she was being rushed to the airport in her old blue jeans and slinky green top. Clara knew an adventure was awaiting her when she stepped off the plane into New York and saw the crowded streets. She smiled. This was her chance to prove herself.
