The Spark
"Could I have a large popcorn please?" I told the at the guy (his name tag read Greg) at the concussion counter.
"Anything for you, Jenna?" I asked my best friend.
Jenna brushed her blonde hair out of her eyes and grinned at Greg. "I'll have a coke thanks," she said.
"Sure," said the guy and winked at Jenna. I tried not to roll my eyes. Jenna was a hopeless flirt. And she was worse than usual now because she was single. She had recently broken up with her boyfriend James, and was on the lookout for his replacement.
Also, boys flocked to her like bees to honey.
"So what movie are you seeing?" asked Greg with a cheeky smile. I noticed he didn't include me in the question, but I answered anyway;
"The Hunger Games. I'm a massive fan."
He briefly turned to nod at me before turning his attention to Jenna.
"Have you read the books?" he questioned her.
She shook her head. "No, Tia here dragged me into it," she admitted.
"I'm Greg," he said.
"I sort of had already figured that out," Jenna laughed, pointed to his name tag. "I'm Jenna. And this is Tia."
I gave him a half smile, but I was getting tired of this pointless flirting. I wanted to go watch the Hunger Games, my favourite book series ever.
Jenna smiled at Greg. "How about a picture?" she asked, batting her eyelashes.
She handed her phone to me. Jenna wrapped her arm around Greg and displayed her most dazzling smile.
"Say cheese," I said flatly.
I handed the phone back to Jenna.
I pointedly looked at my watch. "The movie's starting soon..." I hinted.
Jenna sighed. "Fine Tia, you win."
She whipped out a pen from her sparkly clutch and scribbled her number on Greg's hand. Underneath it she wrote "Jenna. Call me maybe?"
"See you," said Greg. He sounded disappointed she wasn't staying to chat.
"Bye, Greg," she called as she walked off in the direction of the theatre. Jenna turned around and mimed phoning someone.
I laughed as we strode down the carpet.
"Jenna, you're hopeless," I scolded.
"Well, I'm single aren't I? So what's the harm done?" her blue eyes sparkled with mischief. "Besides, I think he may be a contender. He's cute and funny."
"Yeah," I said absent mindedly. Why were boys always falling for Jenna but barely noticed me? Jen had had countless boyfriends where I had only had one- who had cheated on me. I never liked Paul anyway.
I felt jealous that boys always went for bubbly Jenna as opposed to me. We were opposites not only in personality, but in appearance as well. Jenna was a curvy blonde while I was a skinny brunette.
I shook off the negative thoughts. You're seeing an awesome movie, with your best friend, I reminded myself. Think about The Hunger Games instead of boys and looks.
"Tia?" Jenna asked worriedly. "What are you thinking about?"
"Just the Hunger Games," I lied.
Jenna pushed open the door and we went into the theatre. It was jam packed.
