A Sun To A Moon

She burns bright like the sun that shines upon the world, destroying the darkness, giving positivity to those who needed it most. She was the brightest. Unlike him; he was the moon. Only a small part of him shines upon the world, cracking the pitched black nights. He's the star that shows a little light to the world but hides the darkest secret.

She walks by him day by day. Studying the same place he works as a part-timer. She flashed him a smile, hoping for a reply. But he didn't. It eventually became a habit to smile at him each and every day, but his habit in return is just staring back at her with nothing.

One fine day, she walks to his store nearby, eyeing him working as she goes straight to the counter. A smile was stretched on her face as she spoke up,

"Can I have one small cup of your finest coffee, please?" ending it with a giggle. He turned his view to her and repied,

"That's all? 3 dollars please." he looked at her emotionless. She purposely pulled out the money from her purse as clumsy as possible to make him realised that she's just messing around to cheer him up, but he didn't get it. Without a respond, she gives the money to him with a smile yet he took it, expressionless.

He continued making her coffee while she stands there, waiting for him to finish. Her eyes wet set on him all the time, but he didn't seem to care nor realise other than focusing on his work. After the brewing is done, he gave the cup of coffee to her and continued his work.

She walked out of the store feeling a bit disappointed, but she's positive to try making him smile one day. She's sure that she will try. Days turned to weeks,  months, and years had she tried. Every single day, she'll be there at the same time, buying the exact same cup of coffee, same bean, same movement also same motive. However he was all blank, he never seemed to notice that she's trying her best to lighten him up from his gloomy moods.

Until one day, she didn't appear. He looked at his watch, noticing her absent. He waited from dusk till dawn, without realising the day ended. He walked out from the store and straight to her place, but she wasn't there. He asked her friends on her whereabouts, but instead of answering, they handed him a small letter with her signature on the envelope,

'To Mr. Moon; that never smiled.'

He held on to the letter and head back home. Tearing the envelope open, he saw a wilted flower along with a letter. He opened the letter and found astonishing writings on it.

"My dear Moon,

I'm known to be someone that's always cheering people up, and then they called me, 'The Sun'. Every single day, I bought a cup of coffee that I never drank. Only because I'm not much of a coffee drinker. I'm always at the cafe that you work in. Every single day, the same hour, the same minute, just to see you. It's weird but, it kinda became my habit. When you've started working at that cafe, all I wanted to see is you smiling, but I never succeed. It's pretty sad, but I understand. All i want to say is, if you get this letter, it's my last time seeing you. Perhaps it's my last time talking to you too. Because, time is not on my side, I was working to get some money for medication, but .."

Tears started swelling up in his eyes yet it started flowing down his cheeks while he reads the letter, until it dropped on the piece of paper. Though he continued reading,

"It was never enough. But I enjoyed working, it made me happy because it filled up my emptiness when I'm around people. Till I met you, a person that never smiled. Maybe you hold so much pain that it stopped you. Anyways, I should have a break every week but I worked, this might sound weird but I... just want to see you. Everyday. So I came to work everyday. Trying to make you smile, but I didn't make it.

I'm not leaving, but I'm going somewhere; somewhere nicer. So before I go, I just wanted to say something that I've never get the chance to say to you; a smile might be a full moon that shines on the earth at night. The strongest kind of people has it, because it's dark, but that kind of people still can smile no matter how dark it is. And it's you. I know it's you! It's silly but I hope it makes you smile. Please smile, it looks nice on you.

From your sun."

He cried.
