A few horrid hours had seemed like an eternity but I was finally released from the hospital and taken to the rehab center. I was slowly learning how to move my right arm but it was still a struggle much like the struggle of being here alone. I find myself talking to myself as if Dot was still here with me, trying to send her my thoughts to see if she could respond to me from the other side but it came to no avail; I was truly alone.
I was wheeled down the eerie halls of the rehab center until I was wheeled inside of a room with a single bed. I glanced around and seeing Audrey seated next to the bed writing in a book before looking up and catching my gaze. I blushed softly at the realization that I was staring; she just smiled and stood hp walking towards me.
"Thanks Alice. I've got it from here." The nurse behind me walked away leaving us alone together in a moment of silence.
"Do you want to try and walk over to the bed?" Audrey squatted down in front of me maintaining eye contact whilst speaking in a soft voice. I took a deep breath and slightly moved both of my legs just making sure I had full control of them before nodding.
She gave me a soft smile before taking my feet off of the wheelchair pedals before setting them on the floor. She stood up and took my hands helping me stand. Once I was on my feet she wrapped on of her arms around my waist which sent a shock through my body and a shiver down my spine. I simply ignored it and began to slowly walk over to the bed holding onto Audrey's arm. It took a few minutes but I was soon standing in front of the bed before turning to sit down on the side of it.
Audrey looked at me with a bright smile, seemingly proud that I was able to make it to the bed with minimal assistance. Her smile made my cheeks heat up fiercely so I bowed my head and looked into my lap.
"You're doing amazing sweetheart. You'll be put of here in no time." Her voice was soft and gentle once again but I could hear the excitement in her voice.
"That's great but I'm not sure where I'll go afterwards." My voice quivered as I looked up at her, tears stinging my eyes once again.
"Dot was planning on moving to Hollywood so we sold our apartment to pay for the surgery and her plane ticket." A downtrodden laugh slipped through the tightness of my throat. Tears started to slide down my face again causing me to look away while wiping my face.
"Don't worry sweetheart. I'll figure something out alright? But for now you should get some rest. I'll bring you some dinner later okay?" Her tone was gentle and caring as she softly cusped my chin to turn my gaze towards her once again. I simply nodded and scooted back onto the bed before slowly laying down. She pulled the cover at the bottom of the bed over my body and slightly tucked me in before turning to leave.
"Wait.." My voice shook as I softly whispered out to her. She turned around looking puzzled as I continued to talk.
"Could.. Could you stay with me? I'm not use to being alone yet.." Heat rushed to my cheeks after my request.
"Of course sweetheart." She reassured me with a smile as she walked over to the chair that was beside my bed. She scooted a little closer to me before pushing some of my hair out of my face.
"Now get some rest love. I'll be here when you wake up."
