Something I wrote today for an rp. There's a small bit of context missing but it shouldn't affect the story too badly!

This is a Sero x reader story excerpt, they use they/them pronouns :)

The mall was unusually crowded today. Couples were on dates left and right, enjoying the worldwide holiday known as Valentine’s Day. Among the swarm of couples stood a boy, wallet in hand all the while looking like a lost puppy.

Sero had been planning this outing for as long as he could remember, more accurately since the new year ended as well as his first year of high school. He had been working jobs day in and day out so that he could afford a Valentine gift for his friend, specifically a particular [h/c]-haired friend of his.

But that plan was backfiring quickly.

He had planned on using the money to take them on a date to a new cafe that had opened up, but he couldn’t bring himself to message them, making excuses in his head on why it was a bad idea.

‘I know this was supposed to be a friend date, but if I were to ask them today they’d get the wrong idea.’ He reasoned when in reality he was merely afraid of rejection. He had grown fond of the one with [e/c] eyes, and while they hadn’t been much spending time together since the school year ended, let alone at all, he had let those feelings go unchecked.

So now he was here, attempting to search for a gift for someone whom he didn’t even know well. The situation was making him realize how minuscule nine months can be to a relationship, friendship, or otherwise if you don’t spend time with them. Sero bit his thumbnail, the keratin getting scratched from the impact. He wanted the gift to be meaningful, but not to the point where it was something to make a big deal out of.

‘What if I bought them a cake? Who doesn't like sweet things?’ The thought crossed his mind, and so he made his way to the bakery around the corner. It was a cute shop, Sero vaguely remembered his mother taking him there to buy a birthday cake when he was younger, as young as eight. The shop had a sage color scheme to it, but because it was Valentine’s Day there were light pink and white decorations lining the walls, adding a nice touch to the calm ambiance. There were cakes displayed in the windows, a regular occurrence for a bakery, as well as flyers from other shops as well as that one showing off the different sales all across the shopping district.
