thirty two

“i’m livvy,” the blonde said after a few minutes of silence.

i swallowed the sip of liquor in my mouth, “roman.” i never took my eyes off the stars.

                silence.

                “wait… knight? roman knight?”

i fixed my gaze off of the stars and onto the surprised expression of livvy.

                “do we know each other?”

the blonde shook her head, “no,” pause, “aspen… aspen mentioned a roman before she…. passed away.”

                my jaw clenched, “oh.”

                silence.

“you… you spoke to her before she… passed away?” i asked.

livvy nodded, “she… she called me that night but i missed her call because i was showering.”

                i took another drink.

“by the time i got out and heard her voicemail it was already too late… i… i called declan immediately and then rushed to her house. they were taking her body out of the pool when i got there…”

                another drink.

“c-can i have a drink, please?” the blonde asked as her voice quivered.

i handed her the bottle of cheap whiskey.

“you said she mentioned my name before she…”

livvy grimaced as she swallowed the gulp of liquor.

“in her voicemail… s-she was crying and kept saying she was sorry.”

                pause;

                another drink.

“she was asking me to tell everyone she was sorry; that she tried… she mentioned you amongst the few names she listed… she said she didn’t hate you; that she never did.”
