Once in a Red Moon

Chapter 1

CHAPTER 1

I woke to the sound of someone knocking on my door. “Be right there” I called out .I sat up in my bed and looked out through the window. Everything looked normal, like any other day, but I knew it was anything but that. The days would never be normal to me anymore, not since that day when my world was turned upside down. The day my family was taken away from me. The day I lost the people I most cared about. These thoughts made me travel back down memory lane…….

“Jake! Come on! I promised Mom that I wouldn’t be out too late otherwise she’ll never let me hear the end of it!”I screamed across the creek. My precious family dagger hung on my hip as we treaded back home. I always kept it on me for safety considering where our family comes from.

“Yeah, yeah, roadrunner, I’m right behind you…” scowled my best friend. I began to sprint again “Last one to the house is a rotten egg! HA!” . Jake shouted while crossing the creek “ SAM!!!”. We laughed and ran to the house (more like mansion). For some reason, it was deadly quiet; there was no smoke coming from the chimney as I expected it to be. I wondered if Dad forgot that Jake’s parents were coming over. Jake caught up and said “ Hey, what’s wrong?” I walked up to the front door. It was broke open. Jake shouted from the side of the building “Hey! All the windows are broken!”  We entered cautiously. I called out “Mom? Dad? Susan? Dan?”. I opened the door to the study. The sight I saw shocked me. Everybody was dead. I heard a high pitched scream and to my shock realized it was my own. Jake ran in and was just as shocked as me. He screamed “Moooom!!! Daaaad!!!”

“Oh, what’s this?” said an unknown female voice. We turned around and saw a woman figure emerging from the shadows. We could see her crimson glowing eyes in the dark and blood dripping from her mouth. She smiled intimidatingly and her fangs were clearly visible. She laughed maniacally and said “Well, it seems I have overlooked the little ones, eh?”

Jake said “Who are you?!” His voice shook with fear. She licked her lips “Your blood smells so fresh and sweet…” and suddenly glided over to Jake “… Let me taste it-“  and sunk her teeth into his neck. I screamed “ JAKE!!”  and stabbed her with my dagger.  She winced in pain and backed away. I left the dagger which was stuck and grabbed Jake’s hand and ran away.

When I thought we were far enough, I tried to stop the bleeding in his neck. We were from a clan of vampire hunters, so I knew how to heal to an extent since healing was a power most females had in addition to defense. I tried but it wouldn’t. I tore a piece of my sleeve and wrapped it around his neck.

Jake said darkly “I’ve been bitten by a pureblood, that’s why it won’t heal… Sam, listen, get away from me, as far as possible… or better still…” I waited for him to continue. He said “Sam, kill me before I turn into a monster.”

 

I got out of bed and made my way towards the door. Jake came in “Took you long enough! Get ready. It’s time to move.” Right, time to move, as in hunting. I set my guns and stocked up my jacket with ammo.

As soon as we came out, I looked at the dark sky of that new moon night and got lost in thought again “Is this really our destiny?” I was brought back to my senses by Jake who seemed to have been calling out to me for a while. He walked over to me “Hey, what’s the matter?” I averted my eyes “…Nothing…” He rose an eyebrow at me “If it were nothing, don’t you think I would have known? I can read your emotions after all…” The last sentence was said in disdain. Becoming a vampire also meant gaining a few powers and enhancement of the senses.

Though I really did not want to tell him, I knew there was no way he’d let me off. After all, he was just as much a stubborn mule as I am.

“Well?” he waited for my answer. I said “I…was just thinking of the past…” I expected to get an angry lecture from him as usual, but it didn’t come. Instead he pulled me into a tight hug and said “Listen, those things aren’t worth thinking about. Don’t dwell on it. Right now, all we have is each other and that’s all that matters.”  I nodded my head in response. We mounted his motorbike and headed to the woods.
