The test took place in this way, each participant wrote his or her name on a slip of paper and tossed it into a pot, the name drawn first would choose a group of four companions to catch and kill a wolf in the forest across the river. If the group succeeded in killing a wolf before the end of the day, they would receive their warrior outfits and weapons, and a new name would be drawn. If the group failed, they would be left to return to their homes to help with whatever needed doing. They would never be a warrior, nor anything else.

Scarlet wrote her name on the paper and tossed it into the pot, She knew who her group would be if she was chosen, all but one, she had considered everyone in the Boys House carefully, but none seemed right but the three she had already picked. The first name would be drawn soon, and she wanted to be ready if it was hers. She wandered around the armory, thinking, thinking, but nothing had come to mind by the time the first name was drawn.

"Theo, choose your group," said the master.

Theo chose three boys whose names she had never bothered to learn and Carl.

'Bear!' She thought, 'one down'

That group went out and returned by sunset, with the hide of a wolf and smug expressions.

The next day another name was drawn. "Quinton! Choose who you wish," the master said.

Quinton, of course, chose the two strongest of the remaining boys, Sprint, and Willie.

'No! Not Willie!' She thought desperately, trying to calm herself. There were only four boys and herself left. They were the weakest, the least skilled, and the smallest. They reminded Scarlet of the sheep she had raised. Rejects.
