After her argument with Jareth, the dreams came more and more frequently. Each time darker and more terrifying. It was getting to the point where she didn't want to sleep anymore. The only thing that kept her from losing it was the fact that the crystal that he had left her was still clear. Not a hint of red.
Well, there had been red. Just not in the crystal. She had found the drops of blood on her rug. It hadn't been much but it had been enough to shake her. If the Goblin King could be harmed, what chance did she have?
Toby had started to worry enough that he gave her Lancelot back to guard her as she slept. She really was too tired for pride. So, she slept with a toy bear. Hoping that the worst that would happen was that Jareth would be amused by it if he decided to look in on her.
The dream started as the others. First came the darkness. It always came to cloud her senses. Making it so she didn't know what direction she was going. She just knew that she was trying to get away. She didn't even know what she was trying to get away from. She just followed her gut and ran.
In the blackness, she heard hisses and whispers. Nothing she could make out. Just enough to know that they couldn't be anything good. Causing the fear and panic to rise up and threaten to swallow her.
This was so much worse than the Labyrinth because she didn't really know what she could do. She knew why she had to run the Labyrinth. She had been a whiny brat that had thrown a temper tantrum. A whiny brat that unknowingly had the ear of a powerful fae. Be careful what you say. That lesson was well learned. The goal had been to get to the castle at the center.
This? Even with what she did know about the princess and the unicorns, she didn't know what the point of it was. She had a feeling that there weren't any lessons with this. Just fear and confusion.
The darkness parted and she was in a decaying ballroom. The stench made her eyes water. Looking around she only saw shadows dancing along the walls. At least she hoped they were dancing. She didn't look too close. Some things she didn't want to know. On the stone floor there seemed to be frayed material and what looked like bones. Sarah was careful so she didn't trip over them. Ignoring the fact that they looked human.
Something touched her neck. It felt like claws. Her fear spiked, but she didn't turn around to see what was behind her. She didn't want to see. Instead, she closed her eyes, praying that whatever it was would just go away. Feeling like a child hiding from the monsters with a sheet over her head. Of course, the prayer was in vain.
A voice that sounded like the winter wind hissed near her ear, "No one can help you. Why do you resist? Just submit. You'll be happier for it."
At those last words, she jerked from the grasp of whatever it was that held her. Running seemed to be the only thing she could do. Her friends never answered her calls as she ran down the dark halls. All that would answer was the hissing cackle of what was chasing her.
For one second she had thought this was Jareth, but there was something wrong about that. Deep down she knew it wasn't him that was doing this. He couldn't mess with her dreams and some part of her knew that he wouldn't. He also made it clear that he didn't want her around. Sending dreams like this would be counterproductive.
