The Offer

I sighed, tapping my pen against the table as I wait for my dad to begin the meeting with the most successful business man, Robert King.

"Good evening, Mr. Mead." I heard the deep, unamused voice of the businessman who now entered the room, a bunch of other men in suits entering silently behind him.

"Hello. It's a pleasure to be meeting with you, Mr. King!" My father stood, shaking his hand.

"Please, call me Robert." He said, waving him off with a smile. He glanced at me, raising his eyebrows.

"If you insist. That is, only if you call me Gary." I heard my dad's voice, but I was tuning him out. I continued having a silent staring contest with the businessman until I cleared my throat, looking away. Something about this man gave me the chills, and not in a good way.

"I'd like to make this meeting quick, Gary. So shall I get straight to the point?" He sat down, and soon everyone was seated. I kept my eyes down, casted toward the table.

"Of course." I heard my dad's simple response.

"My son has to continue the King legacy, meaning he has to be married by next month. And, well... your daughter here would make a perfect wife. If you accept my offer, I'd like to invest a very large sum of money into Mead Inc." I look up, my eyes wide at the outrageous offer. Surely my father wouldn't force me to marry some stranger.

"How much are we talking, Robert?" I look over at my father, shocked at how quick he was to accept this bribe.

"I'm talking 4 billion dollars a year. That is, if your daughter marries my son next week." I shake my head violently, looking at my dad with pleading eyes. He looks back at me with those money-hungry eyes and I know he's going to accept the offer. I'm doomed.

"Alright. We shall have the wedding ball in two days. It shall be an 1800's themed masked ball. If my daughter is marrying your son, we'll do it the way her mother would've planned for her. Understood, Robert?"

"Understood."
