"P-please, have mercy on the children. They haven't done the least." The old woman's cloudy eyes welled up with tears, one slowly spilling down her wrinkled cheek, the three children behind her quaking in fear at the tall man in front of them. The man smiled, green eyes scanning over the group. He loved when they begged for mercy, it was his favorite part

"Of course, only if you sacrifice yourself first. Without shifting as you plan to." He crossed my arms in front of me, sighing. Her eyes widened, and he could see the fear deep in her soul, the smell of it rolling off of her in waves. She sighed softly and sniffled, nodding and turning to the largest of the children.

"Toby, you have to look after the others now-," she was interrupted by the child whimpering a "No". and looking at the man with pleading, soggy eyes. He flinched and looked away as the man smiled back, golden eyes watching his exchange with his grandmother. "Toby, look at me. I'm doing this to keep you safe. Now it's your turn to protect the others. Rostusha, little one." she said, hugging the small child tightly. The youngest of the group started to cry, a child of no more than 5, one of the older children immediately going to hush him. He sobbed softly into her chest and the man rolled his eyes, wishing they would hurry up. She turned to me and let out a breath. Unfortunately not her last one, not yet at least.

"I'm ready, just promise me you won't harm the children." She said, wringing her hands. The man nodded, honoring her promise. She followed me out the door, turning to say goodbye to the children. The man whistled, two wolves trotting to his side as he made a hand motion, smiling.

The two wolves darted inside and the screams of the children echoed through the small, ruined village, then were suddenly quiet. The woman turned to me and let out a strangled yelp in horror. "I said that I wouldn't harm them. I never said anything about anyone else doing it for me." he said with a sickening grin, the old woman's eyes going wide as she turned to run back inside. The man's hands, quick as lightning, reached out and wrapped around the woman's neck, squeezing until he heard the satisfying 'snap' of her neck, the woman's body going limp. I watched as her body fell to the ground, raising my senses to the air and growling at the lack of a sweet smell that would signal my mates presence.

'She's not here' A voice in his mind hissed. ' I'm quite aware of that' I growled back, punching the nearest tree, a redwood, snapping it in half. 'We'll find her. We need to try somewhere else.' A small squeak snapped the man's attention to somewhere behind him and he whirled, seeing a small ash colored pup scurry down the hill, tripping over branches and tumbling down the hill. Taking four long strides towards the small pup, he snatched it up by the scruff, the pup yelping as it was lifted off the ground. The pup yelped, snarled and barked, trying to get away from the man, teeth clicking in the air as it tried to bite him.

The man snarled. "Stop," he said, the pup immediately freezing, his amber eyes wide and fearful. "Is this your pack?" The man asked, cocking his head to the side. The pup shook its head as best as it could, watching the man with its eyes wide, afraid and wary. "Are you an outsider?" He asked with a growl, gold eyes watching as the pup shook, nodding its head slowly and squeezing its eyes shut tightly. The man huffed and whistled again, a man in shorts jogging up, taking a knee.

"Care for him, and train him well. I want him to be a fierce warrior when I see him again." The man said, handing over the pup to the man, who nodded and carefully held the pup, who looked confused and scared as he was carried away.

The man tilted his head towards the sky, taking another deep breath, growling at the missing scent of what he was searching for.

'I will find you, my mate. And when I do, I will never let you go.'
