the inheritance

Today when I walked into tim hortons I saw my good friend Julie in tears when I asked her why she told me this. This is her story.

It's raining. I hate rain. It reminds me of tears. Tears remind me of death. Death steals from the weak. Death reminds me of grandpa. Fun, laughter, death, crying, happiness... everything reminds me of grandpa.

I hear sobbing. I realize it’s me. My uncle saying his speech my aunts crazed mumbling it’s all just a whisper. He can’t be dead. I see someone watching from behind a tree how dare he intrude. I look back to my grandpas waxen face. It can’t be true his face looks so natural he isn’t dead please no.

I look up and my brother was staring at me. I knew I had done it again; a flashback they haunt me. He doesn’t understand.

I miss him.

Mom  walked in asking us to replace the flowers on grandpas grave. I agreed but the look on Jacob's face was priceless. He has a phobia of cemeteries and anywhere grandpa's ghost could be. He killed grandpa so he deserves it. Mom hands me the flowers and heads back into the kitchen.

We arrived and Jacob looked terrified. I grinned and tried to locate grandpas grave after ten minutes Jacob in his know it all I’m better than you voice said two rows to the left ten forward. We got closer to grandpas grave and I wanted to cry. I looked around to make sure no one was watching and I saw a man. I recognized him. Or so I thought

Tears crying talking and there he is the man I didn’t recognize. Why was he there? He shouldn’t be there.

Thats it the man from the funeral. I always thought he was just a figment of my imagination but I guess not

Jacob saw the man to now I know he is real. But I didn’t understand why we had to go to the city park because of a stupid note. For all we knew he was a serial killer. But Jacob thought he might have known grandpa. So we

went. We walked up to the first bench and there he was he sauntered over. He told us he was grandpas lawer and grandpa had left both me and Jacob a little something but we need to find it. I couldn’t help but laugh yeah right he would have put in his will is what I thought. I stopped laughing and gazed over in his direction and in his place is  a note saying to look for a brown chest in the attic. I hate attics there are bats bugs spiders and who Knows what else in there.

The house was cold and there was boxes everywhere so the first thing we did is head up to the attic. The only thing we saw is a large brown chest. inside it was a note that read.

Dear Julie and Jacob,

I hope you had fun on the little adventure I sent you on. I made sure to use both of your fears to fulfill the purpose of bringing the two of you closer together. But don’t worry that’s not all.

Julie in a neon yellow box underneath this letter there is a necklace I gave your grandma on our wedding day. keep it to remember me.
