Chapter One
Nirvana Brice half walked, half jogged down the street towards her best friend’s house. Her eyes burned from wiping them so much and she was sure her makeup now make her look like a raccoon. She shoved her blonde hair impatiently into a ponytail and cut across the lawn to his front porch.
Ashton Irwin had been her best friend since she had moved to Australia six years ago. He was there for her when no one else was, and she never had to pretend to be anyone she wasn’t around him. They had met, not when she moved in down the street, but when he hit her with his bike. They went out on a few dates but eventually decided they’d much rather be friends than risk breaking up and not be.
Nirvana pushed open the front door and was greeted by Indie, her tail wagging. She gave him a brief pat on the head before making her way up the stairs to Ashton’s room. The familiar sound of video games was peaking through the cracks in the door. What she didn’t realize at first was the sounds of more than one laughing teenage boy.
She pushed open the door, a new wave of tears leaking through only to come face to face with three more people than she’d anticipated. Nirvana froze mid sniffle, her eyes growing wide in surprise and embarrassment. Ashton tore his eyes off his game for a second.
“Hey Dynamite.” He looked back again, realizing her upset deposition. “What’s wrong?”
He paused the game and jumped off of the green bean bag chair he occupied and made his way over to his friend. The other three boys still hadn’t moved, they just looked curiously from Nirvana to Ashton.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t know you had company, I’ll come back later…” She turned to leave when Ashton gently grabbed her arm and pulled her into his chest. She let out a small sob before regaining her composure. After a few seconds, Ashton pulled away and held her at arms length.
“It’s him, isn’t it?” He asked. Nirvana nodded slowly, not meeting his eyes. She didn’t need to look at him to know how he set his jaw, the little muscle jumping slightly, like it did when he got upset. “I still have some of your makeup in the bathroom. Go clean yourself up, yeah? I have some people I want you to meet. “
Nirvana couldn’t help but give a small smile, her eyebrows rising in mock defiance.
“Are you trying to imply I look like crap Irwin?”
His signature smirk graced his features as the girl he knew slowly peaked through.
“Only when I know you’d much rather prefer to look decent when you meet someone, Dynamite.”
“I hate when you’re right.” Nirvana pouted before making her way out the door and to the bathroom,
Ashton flopped back down into the beanbag chair and resumed his game wordlessly. Michael, Luke, and Calum stared at him, waiting for some sort of explanation.
“Well, who was that?” Michael asked, obviously realizing that they weren’t going to get an explanation without probing for it.
“That was Dynamite.”
Unsatisfied with the answer, Calum piped up, “Is she your girlfriend?”
“No!” He answered with a snort. “She’s my best friend.”
A collective, ‘ohh’ was still laced with curiosity.
The door to the bedroom opened once more and in walked a more collected; makeup fixed, and severely embarrassed Nirvana. She nervously tapped on her wrist, a habit that she had developed when she was younger.
