*ping*
"Hey, wake up!"
*clack*
"Heeeellllooooo!"
I sat up slowly, stretching out my sore muscles and glanced over at the door to my cell. A pair of glowing ruby red eyes glared back at me.
"It's about time you woke up," the dunmer said with a huff, "I was beginning to wonder if they threw a stiff in by mistake."
I rolled my eyes and decided to make it a point to ignore him. Why waste time responding to someone so rude? He sneered and hurled one last pebble that bounced off the back of my head. I whirled around and lobbed a fireball spell at his feet.
"By the nine, its just my luck they locked a mage in here!" He shrieked angrily "Wait a minute, golden eyes? On a Breton? Ugh, must be a half breed." He sneered and spat at my feet, "well mongrel, your magic won't do you any good in here. Go ahead, make those bars disappear. Magic your way out of that noose when they decide you aren't worth their time."
"What do you mean you bastard?"
He sneered "You really didn't know? The guard you bowled over has a vendetta, all thieves are given the most severe sentence. You're going to be sent to the gallows, and I will get to watch them toss your maggot riddled corpse into Lake Rumare."
The door at the top of the stairs opened and slammed closed "Please sire we must keep moving"
"My sons, they're dead aren't they?"
"We don't know that for certain."
"They are, I can feel it, and I'm next."
"My job right now is to get you to safety"
A woman, two men in armor and an elderly man came to a stop in front of my cell. The woman glared at me and turned to one of her companions
"What is this prisoner doing here!? This cell is supposed to be off limits!"
The man shrank back and stuttered "T-the usual mix up with the watch I-"
"Never mind, get that gate open." she glared daggers at me and barked, "Stand back prisoner! We won't hesitate to kill you if you get in our way."
As soon as I pressed myself to the back wall of my cell the small entourage entered.
"Wait, I know you." The old man said as he walked towards me "Your face is the face from my dreams. Then the stars where right and this is the day. Gods give me strength."
"Who are you and what is going on?" I asked, mildly unnerved that he seemed to recognize me.
"Assassins attacked my sons, and I'm next. My Blades are leading me out of the city along a secret escape route. By chance, the entrance to that escape route leads through your cell. As for what you have done, it does not matter. That is not what you will be remembered for."
"Yeah but who are you?"
"I am your emperor, Uriel Septim. By the grace of the Gods, I serve Tamriel as her ruler. You are a citizen of Tamriel, and you, too, shall serve her in your own way."
I laughed "I don't serve anything or anyone. I go my own way, always have and always will."
He smiled sadly and softly said "Many presume to choose their own path, but what path can be avoided whose end is fixed by the almighty Gods?"
The female blade looked at the emperor and nervously whispered that they needed to keep moving. She pressed a brick above my small straw bed and the wall swung inwards to reveal an old musty corridor.
The younger blade glanced at me with distain "Looks like its your lucky day, just stay out of our way."
I waited a few minutes after they started down the dusty hall before I started padding along behind them.
