Kai

. . .

The second Rebecca's parents turn around, I can practically see the memory of my words playing across her face.

"I am a werewolf. My father is one. Your parents are too."

It had gone over her head initially, and she probably hadn't heard anything beyond the declaration of myself being a werewolf.

But it's clear, in the way she covers the half-inch of belly that her damp cheer uniform leaves exposed, her dusty hands clasped around either grass covered wrist.

Instantly I'm hit with the need to go to my mate, to comfort her whilst she stands on shaky legs, fearing those who had taken her away from all she had known.

Leo and Reese had treated her as their own. But now, everything that she thought she knew about them was just up in flames.

I wait for her to make her decision. The strain that comes with being away from her nearly bringing me to my knees. Allowing her time to decide her next movement, I mind-link Mason to call off the search for Rebecca.

When she disappeared, floating away like a goddamned dandelion, I ripped trees out of the ground searching for her, becoming nearly feral with not anger but fear.

I couldn't sense her.

We fully mated and whilst in the cave, her presence was as easy to spot as a horse in a ballroom, the second t=she floated away it was if she was just gone.

Like she'd never been there before.

That's the most scared I'd been in my life.

When I sense her movement, I shake myself out of my stupor and immediately begin searching her body for any sign of trauma.

I don't find any, but I can't hide my visible confusion when I no longer see her wings.

Shit, I hope nothing happened to them.

I watch with hidden amusement as she walks up to her parents and looks them both in the eye, close enough to touch, she stands there long enough for them to try to reach out and touch her.

They don't succeed.

Rebecca pulls away from their grasp and walks around them— causing Reese, who had already been crying, to let out a choked sob— as her mother continues to reach for Rebecca who stalks out of their reach until she stands in front of me. She waits a beat, just as she did with her parents, but I'm not about to have that.

With a growl, I cup her cheeks in my palms and press my lips to hers, ravaging her mouth with mine. As we lower to the ground, arms wrapping around each other, I can't help but notice the flavor of her slightly chapped lips. She tastes like red-velvet, like the water from the pond, like pure, fresh, unadulterated nature, and like me.

I smile as I notice it. She's mated to me, officially mine. Part of me exists within her and part of her within me.

We belong to one another. With one another.

And it's more fucking wonderful than anyone else could have described.

Rebecca's palm rests between us, placed squarely on my chest. She pushes me away for a second before her hand goes lax, and hearing the screaming she does internally, I release her lips, albeit reluctantly. Allowing her the air she so desperately needs.

"Baby, what happened? Where did you go?" I'm breathing heavily, but I'm not tired from the kiss. If anything, I'm amped up. It's the excitement of her being back with me that makes me desperate to share the air she breathes.

She looks up at me, panting just as hard, and flashes me the happiest of smiles whilst her gray eyes gloss over with unshed tears. "I'm a fairy."

"What?" I pant in confusion, though I smile back at her, unable to resist planting more kisses all over her face.

She laughs. "I'm a fairy. And some little girl accidentally summoned me. And so my hands are covered in cinnamon and salt from her fairy trap and starting to blister. And I can fly.  And my boyfriend is a werewolf. And so are my— So are my..."

Her sentence trails off, but she doesn't need to finish it as she turns and looks at Leo and Reece who are trying their best not to look guilty.

"Honey, we—"

Rebecca holds up a hand, effectively stopping Reece from speaking, and stands, pulling me up with her.

"I..." Rebecca pauses, rolling her lower lip, swollen from our kisses, between her teeth, choosing her words carefully. "I understand. Why you would do what you did. Why you would lie." She swallows, the nervous sound causing me to step closer and place a hand on her upper back. "But did you know? About me?"

Her voice breaks on the last question and I find myself stepping even closer, my arms enfolding her small frame from behind. Leo says nothing, his icy, old man expression as stiff as ever, down to the Trump hair, but Reece is quick to deny.

"No! Nonono! Mated couples... when they're like us and can't have kids, they choose the perfect one to adopt. It's fated," Reece explains, stepping forward until she holds Rebecca's hands in hers. Leo follows, so that he rests a hand on her back, mirroring my earlier position with Rebecca. "We were looking for a werewolf baby we thought we sensed in New York. But it was you. You were meant to be ours. Our daughter. No matter what you were."

Rebecca's heartbeat flutters and her hips wriggle in my grasp. I get the message, releasing her so that she can hug her mom. And Leo as well, who still hasn't said anything since she entered the building.

He looks more relieved than Reece, though he says nothing, but I ignore it, figuring that his lack of verbal response, is to project the Alpha attitude he attempts to project toward me. To prove he won't be so soft and pliable when I usurp his title.

Rebecca pulls back, and the lack of any security in Reece's mind allows me to see that she's cried quite a bit. Her eyes are red and her nose runny. "No more secrets. Promise me," she implores them, her long eyelashes nearly sealed  with the weight of her tears, and she hugs them again when they murmur their assent.

When they finally break their embrace, though not without Reece promising that along with the lack of secrets should come a mandatory girls day, soon, Rebecca turns around, wrapping her arms around my torso.

"Let's go."

. . .

Next update on Thursday. It'll be longer, I promise.
