Hyejin looked up from her phone, Byulyi chuckling. Yongsun's footsteps were loud. She knew that would get a reaction. She counted in her head, 3, 2, 1.
The door whipped open, the door ricocheting off the door stop. Yongsun did not flinch when it hit her. Hyejin's eyes nervously flicked between the two older girls.
Yongsun waved her arms. Cellphone accenting her words with each jut towards Byulyi.
"I'M!JUST! WORRIED!"
"You weren't joking about the yelling." Byulyi covered her ears. She wasn't prone to hangovers but the shrillness of her voice felt like it would manifest one.
"You've got nothing to worry about." Hyejin assured her, tapping on her phone like this was a normal occurrence,"They were fully clothed when Wheein left this morning."
Byulyi's eyes went to the bathroom door, the shower had stopped.
Yongsun's lips were pressed tight. "That's not what I'm talking about! We thought a hookup would get you out of this dating funk!" She was fuming, her hand crushing her phone.
Byulyi's eyebrows furrowed, "What do you mean 'we'?" She sat up from her bed too quickly. Her head was really starting to hurt and Yongsun wasn't making sense.
"We thought if you finally hooked up with someone who isn't a guy then you'd get out of this "I might be a lesbian" thing-"
Hyejin inhaled quickly, covering her mouth when the two arguing glared at her. Byulyi stood up on her bed, anger rising up from her core and out her mouth, "Then what? I would go back to dating some asshole that you introduce me to!?"
Yongsum stamped her foot, fists bunched. Hyejin thought her phone screen would crack in her grasp. Yongsun lowered her tone,"Have you considered that you're only doing this because it feels like the safer option?"
"What are you trying to say?" Byulyi asked back.
Yongsun shook her head in disapproval. "Since that person, all your relationships have been with men!"
There was an underlying warning in Byulyi's tone.
"Are you implying I make bad decisions?"
Hyejin wondered if she could make an escape without being noticed"You never lasted more than a week with those men and now you're just gonna get with her to occupy your time. You're not gonna be long term. You never are. Because you're too scared to fall in love again!"
Byulyi froze like she had been slapped.
I opened the door, standing awkwardly in my towel. Byulyi looked at me, lowering her eyes to the ground. Her legs looked unsteady under her. Yongsun stood her ground, proud that she had said her piece. But then she saw me and she teetered unsteadily backwards. Her bravado left her because she did not know I was still there.
I cleared my throat, "Am I just a safe bet?" My heart hurt. What the actual fuck. This was not how I imagined the day going.
Byulyi jumped down from her bed with a soft thump. Her hands found mine, "No no no, Yongsun's just-" Byulyi glared at her, venom in her voice,"Get out of my room."
Yongsun left, slamming the door behind her. Hyejin looked very uncomfortable, her phone buzzing with every reply she got back. "I'll just excuse myself for- Hey, babe can I come to your studio? Brunch is canceled." She said into the phone, letting the door click softly behind her. We heard the front door slam next, the bedroom door in its jam shuddering from the impact.
"Does she hate me? She seemed so nice.." I trailed off, Byulyi wiped my face. Was I crying?
"She is, she just." The sigh she let out seemed to take all the fight out of her. Byulyi shook her head, collapsing on her bed. She ran her hand through her scalp, the hair moving back to its place. I sat down next to her, beads of water trailing down my back.
This was some deep shit to have before breakfast. As if a reminder, my stomach growled. I covered it with my hand, hoping it would muffle it.
Byulyi chuckled,"Let's not get into it. Food sound good?"
I nodded, placing my hand on her shoulder. "I'll wait for when you're ready." She gave me a weak smile, eyes dropping from mine to my lips. I ran my tongue over them, tasting mint.
"Did you use my toothpaste?" She questioned, Byulyi leaned forward just enough to smell the mint."I promise I'm not gross, I just really like you and didn't want to have morning breath!" I looked away, bumping her shoulder with mine in the process.
"It's fine. You should bring one over. To leave here..." I looked back at her, hopeful. She kissed me, properly on the lips. That was the assurance I needed. She did like me. She wanted to be with me.
If it wasn't for the warm pressure on my lips. The swell of excitement in my heart. The fresh scent of her soap on me. Or the soft breaths that fanned my cheeks. I would have said it was all a dream.
