Power Transformers

Do you know why transformers are used? Well, are core components of power supply. Without transformers, it's very difficult to control electric power.

Transformers are static electric equipment that converts the electric energy into magnetic energy and again into electric energy. This device performs a vital role in supplying electric power. This device is available in different forms as per the applications.

Depending upon the design and construction transformers are classified into two types

1. Core Type Transformers

2. Shell Type Transformers

Core Type Transformers:

In this Transformer, the coils are wounded around the two limbs of a rectangular magnetic core. Each limb one half of the primary windings and one-half of the secondary windings so that it has to reduce the leakage reactance to the minimum possible.

The Smaller usually have cores of rectangular or square x-section with rectangular or circular coils but it is not needed in case of large capacity transformers. In the case of larger transformers stepped cruciform core with circular cylindrical coils is employed, such a core employs laminations of different sizes.

Shell Type Transformers:

The coils are wound on the central limb of a 3 limb core. The complete flux passes through the central limb and divides into two parts going to side limbs. Therefore, the cross-sectional area i.e. width of central limb is twice than that of each of the side limbs. Sandwich type winding is used in such a structure.

In shell-type transformers, the advantage is gained through the core being used to protect the windings from mechanical damage. The shell-type design gives better support in contradiction of electromagnetic forces between current-carrying conductors.

Shell type structure needs more specific fabrication facilities than core type, while later offers an added advantage of allowing visual inspection of coils in the case of a fault and ease of repair at substation site. For these reasons, In present users is to use core type in large high voltage installations rather than preferring shell type.
