Setting: Present day, Iowa suburb.

As I aim my bow, I breathe in through my mouth, hold my breath, shoot and let out my breath through my nose.  Another 10. The tournament ends and once again I get a perfect 300. My parents make a big deal; yea sure they say they are proud of me and that kind of stuff. They give me the option to go home or go out to eat with them, I choose to go home. As we drive home, I’m staring blankly out the window.

“Great job today, as usual.” My mom says.

I don’t say anything back. I don’t bother anymore.

As we pull up in the driveway I get my bow and head up to my room. My walls are covered in awards, and metals. I put my bow in the corner of my room where I usually put it and go lay on my bed. I'm so tired. We had to be up at 5:00 this morning just to make it to the tournament.  I check my watch and its 2:45. I have time for a nap. I fall asleep and I wake up to a loud crash. I check my watch and it says its 11:30pm. I walk out of my room and peek down the stairs. My parents are stumbling up the stairs. they must have went to the bar... again. I'm really getting tired of this. They go out every night, and come back drunk every night. I just ignore them like I always do. I just go back to my room and shut my door. It’s hard to go back to sleep with them making so much noise. Finally at around 3:00 they go to sleep. Finally peace and quiet.

“Daniel, it’s time for breakfast!”

Ugg, its 8:00. I only got 5 hours of sleep. I get up, get dressed and go down stairs. My parents are sitting at the table with food in front of them. I sit down and I almost take a bite when my mom asks me how I slept.

“Fine, I guess.”

“Good. You have a busy day today. first you have archery practice at 9:30, then you have, well I guess nothing else after 3:30.”

3:30. That’s when archery practice is over. I shoot in for school, but I'm the only one who has to practice from 9:30 to 3:30 every day. How is that fair? After I eat, its 9:00 so I have half an hour to do whatever I want. So I decide to watch TV. My parents don’t want me to get distracted from shooting, so we only have archery channels, and the news. I decide to watch the news.

“Today another tragic story. Kyle Shaffer died early last night. Investigators say that he was beaten to death by his parents. They hung him by his arms and hit him. He bled internally to his unfortunate death.”
