Part I

"Almost...... Dammit" Steven's curse was followed by a bright spark and and a loud pop from the circuit he was working with. He tossed it in the bin with the rest of the failed circuits. "I was so close. Maybe if I rewire the main lead through the backup cell it would work." He aimlessly mumbled to himself as he grabbed the pieces to make a new circuit yet again.

Steven was a young genius, he graduated from MIT at the age of thirteen. He was a brilliant programmer and equally as amazing with machines. He was always inventing new things fooling around in his lab for days without noticing how long it had been.

"Steven!" A deep women's voice echoed through his lab. "Where've you gone to boy? I ain't lookin everywhere for you again!"

"Shit. I-I-I'm in my room, like always mother." He tossed the invention he was working on into his chest of various mechanics and nonworking gadgets and moved to the door between his room and the lab behind.

The door had barely swung close when the door to his room flew open, pulling the other door shut with extreme force. In the entrance to the room stood a hulking women who, if you didn't know her, could easily be mistaken for a male body builder or professional linebacker. Her expression was nothing unusual to Steven, pure and absolute hatred. It was no secret to him that his own mother could not stand him, and she made no attempt to hide it.

"There was a call for you from some agency that said you had a skill they needed, but don't worry, I told them you were unavailable."

"Why would you do that!?!?" Steven rose from the sliver of his room that his mother considered a bed. "This could have been something to do!! I'm always stuck in this room, I never get to do anything! I actually had a chance to be something more than a nerd stuck in a room, and you ruined it!" He summoned all the strength he could manage and pushed her from his room. He slammed the door and leaned against it so she couldn't force her way back in. The lock clicked shut against his shoulder. He slumped down against the door and held back tears.

He got up and walked to his lab. He took the phone he had mounted on the wall and mashed the redial key. He heard the dial tone carry away and with its end the ringing begin. On the start of the second ring he heard the other side answer

"Umm is thi-"

"Steven, I was waiting for your call. I hoped your mother would forward our message to you," the voice was deep and melodious, "You see, we need someone with the smarts and technical inclination you seem to posses."

"I'm flattered, but I don't kn-"

"It's ok, your transportation is being arranged, I figured your mother would not like for you to leave so we have a.... Discrete.... way to pick you up. Be outside with all that you will need at 10:20 on the dot."

"Oh, um okay, I-I'll be there! Wait, what do I need to bring?"

"Anything you want. We've got plenty of room for you, but you won't be needing to bring any of your equipment. Any invention or gadget you wish to bring is acceptable however."

"O-oh okay, I'll see what I can scrounge up and be ready at 10:20."

"Then I guess we'll see you soon."

"Alright then." Steven said happily walking into his lab, "Now, which of you actually work."
