As you get older there are things you just learn. And as one of the oldest elders here on the Rez. I've learned my fair share of things. From reading our legends as a boy to being a shaman in my old age. From the Cullens to having the ability to communicate with the ones that have gone on before us.
We, the Quileute people, learn the legends as small children. They are taught to us at school. From 5 years old we are told what the Cold Ones are. We are told all about Taha Aki, The Great Wolf. Most didn't pay much attention to the legends of old. Not even those whose Bloodline would someday turn them into Legends they heard about. Me, I loved to hear them told over and over.
One night while my parents were 'supposed' to be sleeping I heard a wolf call outside. I didn't think anything of it at first and tried to go back to sleep. Then I heard it again. And after the third call I finally woke up to my parents and grandfather moving around.
I stayed still hoping they wouldn't hear me. I listened as they kissed. My grandfather bid my mom and dad goodbye. As I heard the door shut I went to my window and saw my grandfather sprinting to the woods behind my house.
After making sure my mother and siblings were still sleeping, I snuck out. Meeting up with Billy Black, and Harry Clearwater. They were two of the kids who were in the bloodline. And we were close, having grown up together. We wanted to see what our grandfathers, and Fathers went to at night. Our fathers/grandfathers had told us how unsafe it was to be in the woods without them, but we wanted to find out what our grandfathers had been up to. So of course, we didn't listen.
We were in this brush of forest. We came upon the pack and our grandfathers/fathers We tried to be as still as possible. We didn't want them catching us. As we would be in deep trouble disobeying the orders. They were about to phase. Or I didn't know what it was at the time. I knew now. And when they did, I was in awe. It was so amazing to see up close. One minute my grandfather was a man the next he was a wolf.
It was the first time I had ever wanted to learn more about my people. I was like a sponge. Over the coming years after that first phase, I became educated about the pack. I talked my grandfather into telling anything he could. I was even lucky enough to be able to come with my grandfather to a few meetings though I always had to stay away from the actual meeting as it was for pack members. But I did dig through old books and journals. And when the new generation became wolves I was there to guide them.
My father always worried he would phase and be away from his family like my grandfather. But they came back and set it in motion. So, he and I phased when a few nomadic Vampires came into contact with our lands. Though we didn't phase long. And I grew and started my family.
Sam Uley was the first to phase when the Cullen Coven came back to the area. And though he wasn't going to be the real Alpha of the pack, he would do for now. He was kind and just, with a no-nonsense attitude. And it helped that I told him all I had learned.
Some of the original pack was still phasing but most stopped and were gone on. Ephraim Black still phased to help the new ones but never for long. He mostly stayed out of sight unless they needed him.
But it hadn't stopped with Sam. Jared Cameron, Paul Lahote, and Embry Call all phased after. Leaving many to believe the cold ones were gaining numbers. And it made many more question the treaty we made with them all those years ago. Everyone had an opinion and brought them to the elders. Mostly to complain and criticize.
Though I wasn't interested in hearing the criticism, I knew that if the coven had grown something must be done. And the treaty must be renewed. They must know we aren't going to back down. So I told Sam to call a meeting. We would find a neutral meeting area. We, the elders would be attending this meeting. We all wanted to show the cold ones we meant business. And a united front. Soon we found a clearing just past the boundary line of both sides that was perfect. So it was set. Soon we would set eyes on the cold ones and put the fear in them to keep to the treaty; though no one wanted the bloodshed that could happen if they got mad and went on the killing spree that their kind is known for.
The pack would go early to get seats set up. And make sure we could get there without trouble. Most of us elders were older and needed to get there without being hurt. We also wanted to be comfortable for the long meeting. Luckily for us they got everything set up in no time.
Ephraim met with the pack before hand. Probably telling them to play nice. He was intrigued by the leader. I never understood that and often got mad at him thinking about them as friends someday. They were not people. They had no hearts. They were dead. I didn't even think they had a soul. So what the leader was a doctor. Or that he seemed nice. I was never going to be friends with them. I knew all to well though that Ephraim was my leader and that he was still manly our Alpha. Though he gave it up to Sam. So I headed my words against the coven with gold eyes.
Sam phased to human to start the meeting but the other wolves were around. It would be a surprise attack if the cold ones tried any thing. And of course now we had Jacob Black, Billy's son and Ephraim's great grandson, and my grandson Quil Ateara V. Who joined the pack not long ago. I was sure we had a strong pack should something go wrong tonight.
I looked on with distain. I hated to be around anything other than my people for long. I was hoping that we got to the point as soon as possible.
When the cold ones came all hackles raised and growls were heard among the pack. They to could feel the way their wolves responded to the cold ones. I was proud of them all. They after all were much younger than Ephraim and my grandfather had been. But even so they had their wolves to guide them.
The cold ones stopped short just in front of Sam and the leader extended his hand. Sam took it and shook his hand.
"Welcome Cullens. We the Quileute people welcome you back."
I took this time to study each of the cold ones. First I looked at the closest one to me. She was elvish with dark spiked hair. Her features were quite small too, though you could read her pain as she looked at her leader and her eyes though gold held sadness or hurt or some other emotion I couldn't place at the time. But her shoulders were tense and her stance ready. She would fight for her coven.
Then there was a male next to her. A mate maybe? I was sure they didn't act like it. Still they were close I could tell. His face held sadness and hurt, though I was sure it was because he seen much in life. Until he met the girl by him. His features were all man. A strong jaw. The military stance proved he probably knew more things then the coven leader knew about him. And the scars on his neck and brow proved he fought many and won. I was scared for my people with him this close.
I was scanning the rest when I came to the blonde Barbie looking one. I had felt her stare on me and looked up. She by far was the prettiest. Her blonde hair was shining in the moonlight. It was long. Her features older than the pixie or the reddish haired girl. And her curves were amazing.
I shook my head though. It had been a long time since I had been with a female. So obviously that was why I had this reaction to the blonde one. She was probably using her powers against me. I wasn't going to fall for it. And I turned away from them frowning.
"Just remember we will be watching you. If you break the treaty you will die. Goodbye for now Cullens." And he turned his back on them and went to the forest to shift. The meeting was over. Had I been staring too long at the cold ones to have missed everything?
Later that night as I laid in bed I couldn't get the blonde girl out of my head.
