A husband and wife are on a road trip to Sleepy Hollow for a festival the next day. They have been driving all day and it's near midnight now.
"It's getting late, don't you think we should find a place to stay?" the wife asks.
"Look, there's a nice little house up the road. Why don't we ask them if we can stay for a night?" the husband replies.
"That would be good. It's right next to the forest, too, so there won't be much noise. We can fall asleep right away," says the wife.
They pull up into the driveway, and walk up to the front door. An elderly couple greets them, and kindheartedly let the husband and wife stay. The young couple is just about to head to the guest room, when their hosts offer them dinner. Surprised by the gesture, they decline at first. The old woman insists, and finally, they accept. The four go to the kitchen and eat a delicious warm meal, with much side conversation. After a while, the husband and wife know they must go to sleep or they won't be able to get up in the morning. The two couples part their ways and all sleep soundly through the night.
The next day, the husband and wife wake up early and try to leave without waking up their elderly hosts. They leave an envelope with $50 and a thank you note on the dining table. Getting into their car, they realize they have just enough time to get breakfast before the big day.
"Why look, there's a nice diner up the road. Let's stop there for breakfast!" the wife exclaims. The husband happily agrees and they pull into the parking lot. The diner is decorated with a real vintage feel and a lively waitress greets them at their table.
"And what would you two lovely people like today?" she asks with a smile.
"I'll take an omelet with ham and peppers and the lady will have some pancakes with syrup," the husband replies.
"Coming right up!" she says. The food seems to be made in a matter of seconds, and the waitress is back in no time.
"So, are you folks here for the festival today?" she asks, placing the food on the table.
"Yes, we sure are! We stayed at that nice house up the road last night. Now, we are all rested up and ready to start the day!" the wife replies.
The waitress looks at them funny and says, "But ma'am, that house was burned down in a forest fire years ago. I don't see how you could've possibly stayed there last night."
The husband and wife insist that they did, but the waitress assures them it must've just been a dream. She leaves them with their thoughts, and they eat their food in silence. They finish up and pay the bill.
"Let's go back and take a look at that house again," says the wife. The husband agrees and they drive back. They pull up and find that the waitress was right. There are barely burnt remains on the ground around the house. The couple is astonished by the sight. They get out of the car to inspect further. The wife then goes up to the disheveled dining table in the middle of the rubble, and picks up an envelope with $50 and a thank you note in it, in perfect condition.
