I jumped out of the passenger seat before the car was even in park. I could see the boy in an agent's arms. The boy was small - short and thin. The agent was holding him securely and saying something. I squeezed past agents and officers to the boy.
The two parted. I knelt in front of the boy and offered him my hand. He took it hesitantly. "Hi, honey. My name's [y/n], and I'm a social worker. That means I'll help you with anything and everything you need."
"For how long?" he asked.
"As long as you need," I promised.
"Am I going to...some type of orphanage or group home?"
I shook my head. "Not right now. Maybe eventually, but for now you'll be with me."
"Like at your house?" he asked.
I nodded. "Yep. You'll have your own room and can bring everything you want."
"Are you married?" he asked slowly.
"No, honey. It'll be just us and a Corgi."
He nodded. "Okay." He took a step closer to me, and I rose, his hand still in mine.
"Hey, Seán," the agent called. "You can give me a call anytime, okay?" He offered a card, and the boy took it. He looked at it for a second before embracing the agent. "It gets easier," the agent promised. "It really does."
"Have you talked to any of the paramedics over there?" I asked. He shook his head no. "Hey Ash," I called. She looked over. "Can you look over Seán before we leave?" I asked her.
"Yeah. Hey Seán, let's look over you in the ambulance."
I squeezed his hand before he and Ashley walked to the ambulance together.
"Are you a foster mother?" the agent asked.
"Kinda. I'm a social worker for special needs kids. Sometimes kids stay with me for a little to re-socialize them, get them adjusted to family life for a few nights or up to a few weeks. Normally, I work with physically or mentally disabled kids but I've had a few abuse victims."
He nodded in understanding. "My name's Spencer Reid. I'm an agent from the Behavioral Analysis Unit."
"Seán trusts you, doesn't he?" I asked.
"I understand him. How long do you expect Seán to stay with you?"
"I'm not sure. As long as he needs is all I can promise. After that, I'll still be working with him."
"I'd appreciate it if you could keep me up to date with how he's doing. Would you mind?"
"Not at all."
"Great. My personal number is on the back. If there's anything you think I could help with, please call."
"Thank you, Agent Reid."
"Please, call me Spencer."
I nodded. "It might be a few minutes before we leave, depending on if there's anything he wants to take. If there's anything you think of to say to him, please go ahead." After a half-second of silence, I turned to the ambulances.
"He's all good," Ash told me.
"Alright. Seán, is there anything you want to get before we leave?"
"Maybe," he answered.
"Let's take a look." I offered my hand, and he took it. I led him through the agents and officers into the house. We paused before he led me to his bedroom. "If there's anything you'd rather not keep, that's okay. We'll run to Target or something sometime today."
He looked at me carefully before taking clothes from his closet and some books. He threw them in a backpack and looked around. His eyes hesitated on a worn-down stuffed dog.
"Go ahead and take it. If you change your mind later, we'll get rid of it."
He took it and a few other things before turning to me. "I'm ready."
I nodded and took his hand. After he walked over the threshold, he looked back at the peeling walls and dirty photos once before continuing. I led him to my car and helped him put his things in the back.
"I'm looking forward to hearing from you, Seán." Spencer shook Sean's hand before Seán hugged him quickly.
"Goodbye, Agent Reid."
"You can call me Spencer, okay?"
Seán nodded and got in the passenger seat. He was tearing up and didn't want Spencer to see.
"Thank you, Spencer. We'll keep in touch."
"Please do."
"I'll text you how the night went," I promised. We shook hands before parting.
I drove Seán away from his home. He didn't look back.
