Not just anyone gets into the Durandal God-Weapon Academy. I always knew about this from the day I watched gifted graduates be awarded their God Weapons while I was at the orphanage.
Que me, Ezreal. 11 years old and abandoned. I don't have any more memories before that since they told me I was an amnesiac. I was eventually adopted by a young man named Jarro Lightfeather, who took care of me and taught me all he knew. Eventually, he too left me, going on life long trips and adventures around the globe, and I was left alone with his twin brother, Uncle Jamie.
Both Jarro Lighfeather and Jamie possessed powers they were both well known for. Jarro had the ability to open portals into different locations; "Loop Hole", while Jamie was able to see into someone's future perfectly; "ForeSight".
Growing up, the news always flashed about villains being captured by heroes, and Durandal was always the talk of the day. From my bedroom window, I could see lines of students always on their way home and back to the Academy, almost every day. Many of my friends I knew from middle school would chitchat about what kind of powers they possessed. I too would talk about it like it was the most exciting thing in the world.......
The thing was, I didn't possess any ability. I wasn't a gifted child. Therefore, I wasn't surprised when Uncle Jamie received a letter saying I was powerless.
There's a quote my adoptive father said once after I asked him why he traveled so much. He replied with; "There's nowhere you can be that isn't where you're supposed to be." I actually didn't understand this to a higher degree, but I did, when that one fateful day arrived.
The night before, I was on my way to bed after a long day of going outing with a couple of friends. Uncle Jamie was on the phone with Jarro. After an appealing meal, as usual, I headed for my bedroom.
Right as I was at my door, just out of earshot, I heard Uncle Jamie say something. I sneakily went down the hallway, making sure not to step too hard on the wooden floor as it creaked if stepped on too hard enough. Once I was earshot distance, I could hear my uncle talking to the phone. His voice was urgent as if he was saying something he wasn't supposed to be.
"......yes......I did try to use my ability on him.....too many outcomes, many end up with his ........I'll try to keep harm out of his way, I promise Jarro......goodbye." As he put the phone down and sighed, I rushed back into my room as fast as possible.
That night, I couldn't sleep a wink. Thoughts about what Uncle Jamie said on the phone crisscrossed on my mind. As I lay on my bed, under the warm covers, all I could do was stare at the stars above in deep thought.
