I tear through the wood, passing towering pines and sprinting down the small pathways and across the shallow streams. I look behind me and see a woman in a black coat with red flaming hair following my route. She runs fast as fast as me. My lungs burn and I start to heave, Juniper gains on me and I run up a tree and hide in its branches. The redheaded woman stops and looks up into the tree. My position shifts in the tree and my foot slips.
"I know you're up there Cedar. Just come back down, I only need you to come down Cedar." hold on with my hands as they slip I lose my grip sending me towards the jagged rocks below the pine branches. I grab onto one of the last sturdy branches as I fall and heave my body up onto it. I'm just out of reach of Juniper's arms. The bright orange orb sinks below the horizon and the daylight is gone
"We can do this all night Cedar" she says walking across the way and starting a fire. She removed something from her coat, and she brought food. She stokes the flames and soon a roaring bond fire is alight.
"Are you hungry Cedar I'll bet you love a hot meal, mothers not here to feed you." I think about our mother slaving over the stove still, her offer is tempting, even more so when the heavenly scent of roasting meat reaches my nose. Juniper turns to a dead branch and hacking a piece off and throws it into the fire. Her back is turned and I lower myself out of the tree and run down the road, my heart is pounding and my palms sweaty I can't see beyond the nearest tree making me nervous what might lay ahead. I can hear Juniper's heavy footsteps behind me. I stop a few yards from the tree June's steps stop too
"You can't run Cedar-" Her voice sends shivers down my spine, I turn around
"And how would you know that?"
"Because I was you."
"You don't know what you are anymore June." I say tears springing up in my eyes
"That's not my name! " She snaps back
"I didn't leave you, you abandoned us"
"That's not true you didn't go because you were scared."
"I stayed because Pine was the only thing I had left"
"She was not all we had left and I needed you" we're both shouting by this time, crying and too stubborn to admit it
"And now she's dead because she was heartbroken when her sister left her." I stop to read June's expression "Now Juniper's back and Pine didn't live to see the day. But I did because we had to crawl my way out of where you left us"
"And how did you do Cedar, our sister is dead and who's fault is that- yours-" I lunge myself forward at her, I have had enough. I'm not sure what I'm going to do to her until I've pinned her to the ground.
"It is not my fault, you left. And so what does that make you Juniper a deserter, so why don't you do what you do best and leave" and she does I made sure of that.
AN: This is my first ever non fanfiction published story, I am open to constructive criticism, feel free to comment. Every time I reread this it gets worse but I hope you liked it.
