"The hand of the Lord was on me, and he brought me out by the Spirit of the Lord and set me in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones."
[Ezekiel 37:1]
Death ran rampant.
The scent of rot lingered in the air.
All the while I was stuck fast,
Bound.
The hospital bed and the IV and the mask upon my face.
Breathing.
The silence, like a slowly simmering, burning sensation,
Crept up my spine,
Tickling every nerve and licking clean every crevice.
I stared at the ceiling.
The doorway was imprinted into my mind,
A cross just brushing the knob.
I had reached.
I stepped from the bed.
Green. Then red. Then a deep shade of blue.
A long, long, long way down.
I had fallen.
An inescapable black.
My foot stroked the floor,
Uncertainty clouding sense as I seized up.
The other contacted.
I stumbled.
They watched while I struggled off the bed,
Necks swiveling to witness
My toes crinkle under my weight.
Step by step.
Year by year.
Eye by eye.
They watched me as they faded in the opposite cubicle.
Nothing but bones.
They watched me as they passed,
Footsteps fading in pursuit of the mass.
They watched me.
Until they couldn't.Huffing.
I joined the bristling crowd.
The colors light blue and pink smudged each other.
Convergence into a dull, purple sludge.
Slithering for the exits.
I could not afford to.
Uncertainty.
Razing my mind
Until I saw It approach,
Resonating with an unholy voice.
"I will cause all My goodness to pass before you.
And I will proclaim my name in your presence."
[Exodus 33:19]
I could not look back or see Its face.
Stumbling upright,
I crawled into the curtains,
One with the coarse fabric.
