He slammed the door shut, forcing a stop to the flow of cold wind into the apartment.
"Hey, sorry I'm late. The traffic's bad because of the snow." Rio shook the rain off his curly hair. He noticed the freezing temperature of their home and how his wife had not already tackled him as soon as he stepped in. Missing her familiar embrace, he sought her out as he trudged through the hallway into the living room.
The room looked the way it had been when he left. Except for the ball of blankets in the crook of the couch. His curiosity urged him to inspect the lump of material so he took slow, leisurely steps toward it. Soon enough, a head of hair appeared in an opening of the blankets which belonged to Rio's wife. He crouched down a hair away from his wife, who looked to be hibernating, and moved the blanket covering her face. She was sleeping, probably from waiting so long for Rio to come back from work.
The heaters weren't working and it looked like she was still cold under the thousand layers she had. He smiled a little with adoration of her before lifting her entire being that melted into the blanket and sat down with her on his lap. She stirred in his arms as he cradled her, he gently lifting the hair on her forehead behind her ear. She groaned and forced her eyes open to the man inches from her nose. Half-lidded eyes, a short trail of drool at the corner of her mouth and a small grin stretched on her lips; he revelled in her beauty at moments like these.
"Hi." She mumbled, snuggling her nose into the warmth of his neck. She couldn't see it but his smile widened as he craned to get a glimpse of her glorious form. She found that her own neck strained in an uncomfortable angle so in a sleepy, sloppy movement she opened the blanket and positioned herself straddling his thighs near his knees. Her body plopped onto of his chest where it was warmer than the blankets covering both of them. Rio lifted the fallen blankets around their shoulders before his hands made its way to her waist, his arms slinked around her figure. Her cheek on his chest, she sighed at the heat he provided.
Chuckling, Rio snuggled her impossibly closer and sighed. They fell asleep infinitely warm in each other's embrace, shielded from the cold and dreary world.
