Narrator's POV
Lily crawls painfully down the dark, damp alleyway behind all the over-priced apartment buildings. It feels like every part of her body is being shredded into little pieces. The world around her flashes white for a few seconds and she looks to her ankle where large, red teeth marks are indented into her skin.
Her thoughts are being taken over by a thick fog that is seeping into her mind. After a long, painful time, she reaches the only pot hole in the town behind the local grocery store. Once she manages to tug off the manhole, she uses one of her hands to grip the side of the ladder as the other clutches her gut in pain. What was happening to her? Halfway down the ladder she gets extremely dizzy and falls the rest of the way down. Her back hits the cement with a disturbing cracking sound as a smell reaches her nose, making her vomit heavily.
Lily hears a cry of pain and her eyes dart to the side to see plenty of other people hunched over, turning an ugly green color, and crying out. Her mind suddenly goes back to this morning when she was listening to the news. "Twilight", they called it. A disease. The last thing she sees is a small girl crying in a ball on the floor next to her before her eyes roll into the back of her head and she blacks out.
Farah's POV
"Luna, honey, are you listening to anything I'm saying?" I roll my eyes at my dad and continue to play with the green beans on my plate that don't look appetizing at all. Sometimes when talking to him, the best thing to do is just nod your head and pretend to be listening.
"I already asked you to please call me Farah, Dad." I've told him this repeatedly, but he never listens. My thoughts drift off to Seth as my dad continues to ramble on about how important my academic skill was. Boring.
I begin to drift off until the daily evening news reports are interrupted by an urgent message, "BREAKING NEWS! DISEASE CLASSIFIED AS 'TWILIGHT' IS SPREADING. ONLY WAY OF GETTING IT IS IF YOU ARE BITTEN OR SCRATCHED. STAY UNDER LOCK AND KEY UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE."
This doesn't seem to phase my dad. I'm guessing it's because of the fact that we live in the governments mansion and that this is the safest, most locked down building in the town or he thinks it's to crazy to be true. I have to admit, it freaked me out a little at the time, but now that I think about it I have nothing to worry about. I mean, zombies? Really?
My dads phone goes off "Darling, clean off your plate and go to your room, please. I need to take this call." he orders. Being the obeying child I am, I do as I am told. After scraping all my untouched food into the trashcan, I run up the massive staircase to my room. Once the door is closed, I whip out my phone from the pocket of my skinny jeans to see one unread message from Seth. This brings a smile to my face.
'Hey love ;) What are you up to?' -Seth
'Just finished dinner. Meet you in 10?' -Farah
'See you then' -Seth
Quietly, I open my closet and put on a pair of my jean shorts and pale orange tank top. After applying just a dab of make-up and throwing my curly mess of hair into a ponytail I unlock my window and yank it open. The warm air hits my skin as I stealthfully climb onto the nearby branch of the huge tree in my front yard. In no time, I've already climbed down the tree.
