The girl in the attic

Chapter 33

Preston’s POV

I picked Katie up at the hospital later in the afternoon pretending that I went to school. I wanted to make sure everything was sorted out before I told her. She fell asleep in the car so I had to carry her to my room without being seen. Luckily my aunt and uncle wasn’t home making it a bit easier for me.

I placed her on the bed and let her sleep while I checked my emails. I had a few but nothing of importance. Devin was bragging about some party he was at and about how he scored with some hot chick but it didn’t interest me. How could I be jealous of anybody when I had Katie?

By the time she woke up my aunt and uncle was back home. Lina had made dinner but I told them that I wasn’t hungry and that I would eat later. I waited until Lina finished cleaning the kitchen before I went to fetch my food. We were eating some sort of roast, so I grabbed some extra meat and salad and heaped it into my plate before I hurried upstairs.

We sat on my bed eating and talking about my day and with every second that passed I found it more and more difficult to pretend that I was at school. I wanted to tell Katie about my new job and about our place so badly that I decided to phone my parents as soon as I could. When we were done eating I took out my plate and got us some hot chocolate. The house was quiet so I figured it was safe to walk around with two cups.

I got into bed with Katie like I’ve been doing for the last couple of weeks and we watched some movie that was showing on TV while drinking our hot chocolate. She fell asleep in my arms before the movie ended. When I was sure she was in a deep sleep I maneuvered out of her arms, grabbed my cell phone and headed outside.

It was after eleven and pitch black outside but I had no idea what time it would be where my parents was. I still didn’t get their traveling schedule so I had no idea where they were. I pressed the call button on my dad’s name and hoped that I would catch him at a better time than the last time I phoned. On the fifth ring he picked it up.

We said hello and he told me a bit about their holiday before I gathered enough courage to tell him what I was up to. I told him about Katie and how much I loved her. He seemed surprised by my declaration of love but he also seemed happy about it. Next I told him about the fact that she didn’t have anywhere to stay, I didn’t mention the fact that I’ve been hiding her in my room for the last couple of weeks figuring it was better that way.

I explained to him how we have been battling to get her to the hospital because it was so far away and then I told him that I wanted to start working and get my own place. He was completely shocked to say the least. I also told him that I wanted to transfer schools, I would need their approval to do it so I was trying to be very friendly but persuasive at the same time.

“Please dad, it will really mean the world to me,” I begged after a long silence.

“I’ll have to speak to your mother about this,” he replied still sounding a bit shocked.

“Ok, thanks dad,” I said hoping that I have said enough to convince them.

“I’ll phone you later,” he said and then hung up.
