Power tools development

There can be no arguing that power tools have helped humans build better and easier than ever before.

Long gone are the manual ways of working.

Stanilles' Cabin, a shelter built with a helicopter

There is nothing better in this life than being able to enjoy all the beauty that nature offers us, although on many occasions, being able to access a certain area requires a lot of work and effort. The clearest example is with the estanilles cabin, a mountain retreat located in a unique corner within the Upper Pyrenees National Park. Its appearance may seem simple to us, but behind it, there is a long history until this project is realized.

Project promoted by the NGO Acciónatura

This house built on the mountain, is the culmination of a project that seeks coexistence between the brown bear of the Pyrenees and the inhabitants of the local populations. The idea is that this shelter will serve as accommodation for one or more shepherds who take care of the flocks of the sheep of various owners during the four months that last the summer. The idea is that these shepherds can protect animals from possible attacks by bears, while providing them with accommodation with a high degree of comfort.

Construction with certain bioclimatic criteria

This construction consists of a wooden hut divided into modules and having an area of 25 square meters. The truth is that it is not a large country house, but inside, the shepherds who will inhabit it, will find everything they need for their day to day.

The different parts of this house were built in the workshop, as the area where it was located was inaccessible to any four-wheeled vehicle.

In this way, to climb the different parts, they had to do so with the help of a helicopter, in charge of taking each panel from the workshop to the area where it was built. But this was not the only problem, as the designers also had to deal with the problem of the maximum weight that the helicopter could climb, and that could not be more than 800 kilos of weight.

The design of the wooden cabin starts from an absolute respect for the natural environment in which it is located. The first thing we found is their innovative foundation system they used. It is a foundation that is 100% detachable and does not interfere with anything with the area. These foundations were carried out using the technique of metal gabions, which consist of metal structures of the same length as the hut and which are filled with local stones. If the house is ever dismantled, it will only be necessary to empty the stone gabions to leave the place again without any trace of foundation and debris.

The construction is designed according to the standards of passive houses, being oriented south through a large double glazed window that serves to enhance passive solar uptake in summer and thus gain energy efficiency.

Each of the panels that are part of the estanilles hut, consists of wooden panels filled with 20 to 25 centimeters of recycled cotton, which seeks to minimize thermal losses, thus improving the energy efficiency of the shelter.

The electricity necessary for the operation of the house, is obtained by the use of photovoltaic plates that were placed on the roof of the house. In addition, to protect your tenants from the cold of the area, a wood-burning stove has also been installed that is able to heat the environment in a matter of minutes.

To all this, we must add the design adopted to fight against the strong gusts of wind at that height. To do this, a sloping roof was designed that reduces wind resistance and helps prevent the accumulation of snow in winter on the south facade.

In the image above these lines, you can see how the distribution of the house looks.

To complete the information about the Estanilles Cabin, we want to leave you the following video posted on Youtube and where you can see everything they had to move to make this project a reality.

It is impressive to see the process of building the Estanilles Cabin, no longer by the house itself, but by everything that has been necessary to move in order to make this project a reality. What opinion do you have about this refuge we brought you today? Encourage you and share your comments with us. We're waiting for you!
