Everyone thinks that they are a part of something bigger in life, well some of them are. This is about a seventeen year old boy who has no family, he lives on the streets and in an orphanage in the city of Spokane Washington. This boy is currently sitting in an office of that orphanage wearing dark grey jeans, black Avengers T-shirt, slightly beaten shoes, he had some facial hair on his face which is strange for his age, and he wears a black zip-hoodie with a white flame on it.
“Joseph,” said the woman that sat at the front desk of the orphanage, she had a name tag on her desk that read “Crystal Malkin” she wore a light grey suit with a tie and white shirt. “You’ve been with us for at least twelve years now, people have shown interest but you shut them down. And I can’t help but wonder why?” asked Crystal.
Joseph just sat there, head down, looking like he wasn’t paying attention to her. Crystal sighed, then shuffled some papers around.
“Look, I don’t want you to throw away your future like this, you’ve grown from a five year old boy to nearly a man. I know you are meant for great things in the future Joseph, you just need to-”
“What do you mean by Future?” asked Joseph. He raised his head and looked her in the eyes. “You talk big but no matter what I’m still here. You wanna know why I reject all those families? It’s because I’d never fit into any of them, I had a father and he dumped my ass to the curb. He didn’t love me so why would anyone else.” he leaned back into his chair and faced away from her.
“Joe, I’m sure that your father loved you-”
“Then why did he leave me?” Joseph asked. Crystal looked uncomfortable and didn’t know how to answer his question. “I’ll see myself out.” he said. He got up from the chair and walked out of the office.
There were children running in the halls, playing with each other, talking, eating food, and much more. Joseph walked past a group of young boys that were playing with cars, acting out a traffic jam and getting mad at each other, this kind of thing brought Joseph joy, the sight of imagination in a child’s eyes gives him hope for a better world.
“Well, lookie here guys.” said a male voice. Joseph turned around and saw three older boys cornering a younger child holding a transformers toy that looked broken. “What ya got there, Squirt?”
“It’s Bumblebee, he’s the coowist Autobot eveaw.” said the young child. One of the other older boys grabbed the toy and took a look at it.
“Coolest huh? He looks like the weakest one if you ask me. Right guys?” he said. The others agreed with him.
“Give him back!” cried the child. He tried to reach the toy, the boys were playing monkey in the middle with the child but they were throwing to high for him to catch. “Give him back!!” the boy cried again.
“Or what?” asked the first boy that spoke.
“Hey!” Joseph shouted. The three stool still as he came walking over to them. “There a problem here, Dustin?”
“No, man. No problem at all.” answered Dustin. “We were just playing with the youth, right boys?” the two agreed with him.
“Well, as fun as it may have been for you, why don’t you give that toy back, and go somewhere else.” said Joseph as intimidating as he could be. Dustin walked closer to him, their faces were close together.
“Or what?” he asked. “You gonna do something about it?” Joseph headbud him sending him back a couple of steps.
“There, I did something, now you gonna do what I said?” Joseph said. Dustin was lifted by the other two boys, he was ready to punch Joseph, but he saw Crystal standing in the hallway, watching them.
“Yeah, sure thing,” he gave the toy back to the younger boy, then turned back towards Joseph and bowed jokingly. “Your majesty.” he gestured for the boys to follow him and they did so.
“Thank you, Joseff.” said the boy.
“Scotty,” Joseph knelt down to be level with him. “Next time you get cornered, stall until you can find an escape.”
“Can’t I just call an adult?” Scotty asked. Joseph looked behind him to see if Crystal was there, she wasn’t.
“Adults can’t help you with everything, it’s better to learn when the mind is young and the heart is pure.” Joseph patted Scotty on the back, Scotty went running towards the other kids his age and played with them.
Joseph stood there, hands in his sweater pockets, watching the youth run off and carrying the wisdom he knew but can’t remember where he learned it from. He was struck on the back of the head by a ball of paper, he turned around to see where it came from, but found nothing.
He knelt down and grabbed the paper, unfolded it, there was writing on it that said “Meet me in the alley in ten seconds, the clock starts after you throw this paper away. Love -G.” he smiled, threw the paper away and walked towards the back door. In the alley there was a red ladder, a window that leads to a dark room, and a door to the orphanage.
“Hello?” Joseph said. “I’m here, where are you?”
“Boo!” said a female voice. Joseph jumped and then smacked the girl on her arm.
“Shit...that’s not funny G.” he said, placing his hand on his heart as if he nearly died.
“Awe come on, Your Majesty,” G said, copying the same gesture that Dustin made. “You got to admit, you’re pretty much the king of this prison. Wouldn’t that be cool? If you were a real king?”
“Me a king? That’s rich.” Joseph said.
“Your majesty, there are armed guards at the gate, whatever shall we do?” said G, talking in a british accent and acting silly.
“You can tell them, if they’re here for the party they missed it.” he said. G leaned on him as if she was dying.
“My king, this may be the last chance we ever see each other, don’t let it be all for not.” she was still acting the same as before.
“Ok, for real this time, what do you want? Why did you call me here?” Joseph asked after he pushed G off of him.
“I just told you.” she said, acting normal. “This may be the last time we see each other. I got adopted.” Joseph didn’t know how to feel, G had been like a sister to him and now that she has a family to go to.
“That’s great!” he said, acting happy. “When do you leave?” he asked.
“Tomorrow morning, you’re the last one I wanted to say goodbye to. But I thought that we could have one last adventure together, eh? What do ya say?” G was nudging him to say yes, she batted her long eyelashes and pretended that she had puppy dog eyes as she plead to him.
“Ah, alright.” Joseph said. “What do you want to do?” he asked. G pulled a piece of paper out of her pocket and showed him what was on it.
“Remember that skate park that’s not far from here where we first met?” she asked.
“Yeah, it’s been closed for a couple of years. Why?” he asked.
“Well, what if...we...sneak in and have some fun there before we got to head back?” she asked. Joseph didn’t want to get into trouble, again, but he did want to make his last day with G memorable.
“When?” he asked.
“Right now. Let’s go.” G grabbed Joseph’s arm and they were off to the park.
